Current Events

As many of you may or may not have already heard, one of the most recent major events to happen in the United States was the Las Vegas massacre, as it has now become known as, which took place on October 1. With at least 59 people killed and over 500 injured, many consider this event to be one of, if not the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

The shootings were reported to have been committed by a man named Stephen Paddock, who open-fired into a crowd of about 22,000 people who were attending an outdoor country music concert that night. He committed the shooting from a room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, and it is believed that he began to fire at the crowd around 10:08 p.m. It is believed that the shooting lasted about nine to eleven minutes, and possibly even more, where Paddock fired nonstop into the crowd. By the time the police were able to break through the door, they found Paddock dead, and so it is presumed that he took his own life at some point.

Even now, investigators have yet to determine what Paddock’s motive was in committing the shooting, as it is assumed that he had no ties to terrorist groups, and he did not previously show signs of aggression or violence that would lead one to believe he could commit it. Despite finding many weapons in the hotel room, in his car, and at his home, investigators have yet to find key evidence in figuring out why Paddock would commit the shooting. It is also assumed that Paddock acted alone in the shooting. Due to the ambiguity of his motives, investigators are not calling the shooting an act of terrorism, as that would require it to have been done to intimidate society for political purposes. Hopefully we can get a better understanding of how and why this event took place as it is currently being investigated.
