Ever flipped through a yearbook and been instantly transported back to a specific moment? A powerful photo has that ability! But yearbook photography isn't just about capturing smiles at a pep rally. It's about photojournalism, using photographs to tell stories about real people and events.
Here at Morris Area High School, we're all about capturing the energy, emotions, and spirit of our school year. That's where you, our future yearbook photographers, come in!
Beyond Posed Portraits: Yearbooks aren't just about staged photos. Photojournalism allows you to capture candid moments, genuine emotions, and the essence of what makes our school unique.
Telling Stories with Images: A single photograph can tell a thousand words! You'll learn how to compose your shots, use different perspectives, and capture moments that bring stories to life.
Everyone's a Storyteller: You don't need fancy equipment to be a great yearbook photographer! We'll teach you how to utilize the camera you already have (phone or digital camera) to create impactful photos.
Composition Techniques: Discover the "rules" that help you create visually appealing photographs (rule of thirds, leading lines, etc.).
Lighting & Angles: Learn how to use lighting to your advantage and experiment with different angles (bird's-eye view, worm's-eye view) to add depth and interest to your photos.
Capturing Candid Moments: Master the art of capturing natural reactions and emotions that tell a story without needing to pose your subjects.
Editing Basics: Learn simple editing techniques to enhance your photos without going overboard.
By embracing photojournalism, you'll become a visual storyteller, documenting the memories, achievements, and experiences that make our school year unforgettable. So, grab your camera, unleash your creativity, and get ready to capture the magic!
Explore photojournalism by capturing a story through a single photograph.
The Challenge:
Choose Your Story: Think about an event, activity, or experience that happens at your school. What story do you want to tell through a photo? (e.g., Band practice energy, Debate team camaraderie, Cooking club creativity)
Capture the Moment: Using your phone or camera, take a photo that captures the essence of your chosen story. Aim for a candid shot that showcases emotions and natural actions.
Compose Like a Pro! Consider the rule of thirds (imagine dividing the frame into a 3x3 grid and placing your subject off-center at one of the intersections) to create a visually interesting photo.
Think Outside the Box: Experiment with different angles! Could a bird's-eye view (looking down) offer a unique perspective? Or could a worm's-eye view (looking up) add drama?
Deliverables:
Submit your photo electronically (following school guidelines).
Write a brief caption (1-2 sentences) explaining what your photo depicts and how it tells the story of your chosen event or activity.
Bonus Challenge: Explain what specific composition techniques you used in your photo (rule of thirds, angle choice etc.) and how they contribute to the storytelling aspect.
Remember: A great photojournalism shot captures a moment that speaks volumes! Let's see your stories unfold through the lens of your camera.
