What is Envirothon?
Envirothon is North America’s largest high school environmental education competition. Participating students learn about Minnesota’s natural resources, collaborate with fellow team members, and discover career options in natural resource management.
What happens during Envirothon?
During the regional Envirothon meet in the spring, local natural resource professionals facilitate five hands-on learning stations for participating students. Students are then assessed on their knowledge in these five areas: aquatics/wetlands, forestry, soils, wildlife, and a current issue topic (different each year). In addition to these stations, teams of five students will compete by researching the current issue and preparing a 10-minute oral presentation on this topic. The top three teams in each regional competition will advance to the Minnesota State Envirothon, which is held in different locations from year to year later on in the spring.
Who can join Envirothon?
Any student in grades 7-12 can participate in Envirothon, but teams of five are required to advance to the state level.
Is there a cost to join Envirothon?
There is no cost to join!
What is the time commitment?
The time commitment for Envirothon is relatively low compared to other extracurricular activities. Students are expected to review resources pertaining to the five main topics (aquatics/wetlands, forestry, soils, wildlife, and a current issue topic) as well as research about the current issue and prepare a 10-minute oral presentation to give at the regional Envirothon meet. All activities - exams & presentation - are done as a whole group.
The Morris senior team placed third overall and third in the oral presentations at the 2012 Area II Envirothon held at the Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center near Spicer.
