FAQ

When should I take the ACT the first time?

April or June of Sophomore year. Register early to select the test site of your choice before it fills up.

Should I guess on the ACT?

YES! never, leave anything blank on the ACT.

Do I qualify for accommodations?

To request accommodations, you must be using accommodations at MCPS. Accommodation request must be submitted at least 2 months PRIOR to the REGISTRATION DEADLINE. Ask Mrs. B for more information.

What is the format of the ACT?

English: 45 minutes

Math: 60 minutes*

  • Algebra (roughly 55-60%)
  • Geometry (roughly 25-30%)
  • Counting/ Permutations/ Combinations/ Probability (roughly 5-15%)
  • Trigonometry (roughly 5-10%)
  • Basic Coverage of Matrices (roughly 2%- typically 1 question)

10-minute break

Reading: 35 minutes - 4 passages with associated questions.

The best way to improve your reading score is to do a timed reading passage every day. Print some of the free, actual tests from the resources in the ACT Guide. The order of the passages is typically Fiction, History, Art, and Science. If you can't get all 4 done in 35 minutes, focus on your best 3 subjects and guess on the 4th. Never leave anything blank.

Science: 35 minutes
