History/Social Studies Classes
History is a guide to navigation in perilous times.
–David McCullough, Historian
The mission of the Jockey Hollow Middle School History/Social Studies Department is for students to read, speak, write, and think as historians. This involves the use of historical thinking skills, the critical examination of both primary and secondary sources, debate, seminar discussion, document-based argumentative writing, and the presentation of their work.
Jamie Sherry began teaching at Masuk High School in 2009 and now serves as Secondary Instructional Leader for History/Social Studies. She loves to travel and explore historical sites. Miss Sherry wants to help students share her enthusiasm for social studies and to help students to think critically about our past, present, and future.

Douglas DelVecchio Jr. started teaching at Jockey Hollow in 2003 after working in the sports publishing world and ESPN. His mother Carol DelVecchio taught 4th Grade at Monroe Elementary for 35 years and his father Douglas taught 8th Grade U.S. History at both Chalk Hill/Jockey Hollow for 34 years. His wife, Jacqueline, is currently an 8th Grade Language Arts teacher at Jockey Hollow. “Mr. D”, as his students call him, teaches 8th Grade U.S. History. In the summer of 2018, he was one of 25 history teachers selected from around the country to take part in a fellowship in Washington D.C. on the Civil War and how it impacts our society today. Mr. DelVecchio coached the 8th Grade Baseball team from 2003 to 2017, going 14-0 in his last season before retiring to coach his oldest son’s T-ball team. Mr. D’s favorite aspect of teaching is seeing his students enjoy the study of history and begin to understand how history impacts all of us today.
