At Monroe Township High School, we recognize the importance of exploring career opportunities as part of a complete learning experience. Our Academies are designed to meet the needs of students with a clear and definitive interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and/or mathematics) or Business.
The academy program has been designed to prepare students for a competitive post-secondary education by cohorting them in various honors and Advanced Placement courses. Students are guided and supported through the development of a digital portfolio to showcase their work and experiences. Pre-AP English 1, Pre-AP English 2, and AP Capstone courses (AP Seminar and AP Research course sequence) allow students to develop advanced reading, writing, and research skills. Students demonstrate these skills in a culminating capstone research project that is presented through the AP Research course. As academy members, students must register for the AP Seminar exam through the College Board and complete all performance and research projects. Students who earn a 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and score a 3 or higher on at least four other AP exams are eligible for an AP Capstone diploma.
Educators will support students in the program by providing cross-curricular educational experiences, using career content-related examples in instruction as appropriate, establishing connections to the career through community outreach, and providing a peer mentoring framework for students. Students also have the opportunity to participate in workshops, academy engagement meetings, and networking events.
The Honors STEM Academy offers three tracks: Biomedical (Honors & Advanced Tracks), Computer Science, and Engineering (follows the Project Lead the Way curriculum). The Honors Business Academy also offers three tracks, which include Business Management, Economics & Finance, and Marketing. This is a four-year experience. Once students accept a seat in the program, they are expected to remain in the program through graduation. However, students must exhibit strong academic performance, outstanding conduct, and responsible attendance to remain academy members.
The Honors Academy is an application-based program. Applications for in-district students become available in late October to current middle school students and are due in mid-November. Applications for students entering from another district will occur in July/August prior to 9th grade. See the high school website or your counselor for an application.
Sample schedules are provided below. Please note that the entry math course is not fixed in all cases and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. To remain in the Academy, students must meet all prerequisites and course access criteria.Â
