A Brief Synopsis of the Mona Shores Band Program

Mona Shores Bands have received consistent high ratings at Concert, Jazz and Marching Festivals and won countless Marching Band contests around the state of Michigan. The high school bands have taken several trips to Europe and China which included performances at some of the world’s most famous destinations. The band has performed regionally and nationally including performances in the Magic Kingdom at Disney World in Orlando, FL. The high school marching band has won 6 MCBA State Championships and is the 2006 USSBA Division V National Champion.

Our middle school band program has participated in many MSBOA sanctioned band festivals in addition to Mona Shores sponsored festivals and clinics. Our middle school students have had clinics from a number of Michigan’s finest educators including: Scott Boerma, Western Michigan University; Kevin Sedatole, Michigan State University; Dr. Robert Spradling, Western Michigan University; Dr. John Pasquale, University of Michigan; Michael Kauffman, Interlochen Arts Academy; Barry Martin & Kevin Tutt, Grand Valley State University; Gabe Southard, Hope College; and many more….

The MSMS 7th & 8th Grade marching band was chosen as the first middle school to be the lead band and ceremony band for the 2013 Memorial Day Parade in downtown Muskegon. Traditionally, this annual honor has only been bestowed on high school caliber marching bands. Additionally, our high school band performs annually on Memorial Day in the American Salute concert held in the Frauenthal theater to a capacity crowd.

The MSMS 8th grade band gave the World Premiere performance of Jonathan Newman’s 3 O’clock Mix on May 1st, 2012 in the Mona Shores High School Performing Arts Center in Norton Shores, MI. The piece was commissioned by the Mona Shores Middle School band in addition to some additional Ohio-based music ensembles. Funding for this commission was provided in part by the Mona Shores High School Band Parent Association.

The years of development spent in the middle school band program will enable Mona Shores band students to have numerous opportunities to travel and perform as a member of some of the finest musical ensembles in the state of Michigan.
