The Montessori School of Maui began in a small quonset hut with Theresa Andreae as the school's first director with only eight students. In 1983 - 84 school year, the First Board of Directors was formed and Montessori of Maui, Inc. was incorporated.
The school continued to grow and the Board of Directors, in 1984, decided to move the school. They formed two classrooms in the Parish Hall of Holy Rosary Church in Pā'ia.
In 1985, the first ever Lower Elementary class opened in the Kahului location, with the teacher being Heidi Tobias. The school was open for nine years and eventually the Upper Elementary began with Jing Wong at the helm.
In 1990 - 91, the permanent site in Makawao was chosen to insure the future of our school through an agreement with the Maui Land & Pineapple Company. In 1992 - 93 groundbreaking for the new campus began, along with construction funded by Capital Campaign.
