As part of the Lights on for Learning Summer Program and in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, we, students from both John Deere Middle School and Woodrow Wilson Middle School, are forming a new partnership. This joint venture, which we call “Moline LIFTOFF”, combines our creativity and technology skills to compete at the Apollo Next Giant Leap Student (ANGLeS) Challenge in Naperville, Illinois on July 20th.

The first result of the partnership is a mission patch. Our team name with the initials of our two schools, JDMS and WWMS, show us coming together to form one team. Both Moline, Illinois and the moon are displayed in the design. The green and gold colors show our gratitude to the Deere & Company and their support of engineering education in Moline.

Prior to the Illinois hub competition, we are developing the skills necessary to pilot a drone and land a lunar module, build and program an EV3 robot to navigate a lunar map, deliver a payload, and pick up rock samples for identification.

We've decided on our path through the obstacles on the lunar surface.

Now it's time to program our rover to meet the challenge.
