Wonder

February 16, 2024

MES is kicking off our fourth annual One Book, One School event!  Each family will receive its own copy of the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio to read together at home during the next four weeks.

Reading aloud at home with your child is a valuable activity.  It encourages our children to become engaged readers while fostering a special family bonding experience. Everyone including students, parents, teachers, and administrators will be following the same suggested reading schedule.

Today, the oldest child in your family has received this letter, a copy of the book, and a reading schedule found on a handy bookmark. Please read a few pages, approximately 15 minutes per night, on the evenings of Sunday through Thursday.  Check out the One Book, One School section of the MES website for audio read-aloud, videos, pictures, reading schedules, trivia, and other interesting information!

In school, students answer daily trivia questions read during the announcements to encourage and reward active participation in the program.  Please be sure your family is on track with the reading schedule so that your child can participate in all the fun.  You will quickly find your child’s enthusiasm in participation and pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. We also request keeping to the reading schedule by curbing your enthusiasm to read ahead.  Throughout the duration of the program, everyone will be excited and talking about Wonder!

One Book, One School is a great program in which children of all grade levels will be listening to the same book. Research has shown that reading to children beyond their reading level is beneficial.  We have selected a title that can be followed, understood, and enjoyed by younger students, while captivating, stimulating, and entertaining older students.  We look forward to talking with both you and your child during the next few weeks about the recent events of Wonder.  With your help, we are building a true Community of Readers at MES!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Chorley
