The phrase “if we want to go fast, go alone. If we want to go far, go together”, encapsulates the focus and intent of the PESTA Facebook (FB) group, which aim to provide:
informal PD to a wider target audience that is participant-driven;
a networking platform for PE Teachers and relevant organisations to collaborate, share and learn ideas on teaching and learning;
a repository for teaching and learning resources created for and co-created by PE Teachers;
an environment that enhances PE Teachers’ professional capital.
The FB group leverages social media technology for teachers to share best practices, exchange and access ideas and resources. Inevitably, it is a source of support and has created a ‘kampung spirit’ within the fraternity.
Before the FB group, sharing of best practices and ideas were limited to the termly get-together for some cluster schools and in conferences organised by MOE. Professional conversation was largely limited to teachers within school, or with friends from another school.
As research has shown a growing trend of adult learners who prefer to learn informally, PESTA has leveraged social media platforms to provide informal PL. PESTA Facebook (FB) page was set up in 2018 to bring the PE community together to crowdsource ideas. It has empowered the teachers to share pedagogies, teaching and learning ideas, as well as engage in active discussion, networking and celebration of each others’ efforts and successes. PESTA has also used the platform to publicise our workshops and host FB-live PL sessions. We currently have 2100 members (approximately 2/3 of PE teachers), receiving over 1100 posts annually, with more than 2000 comments and 20,000 reactions. Teachers have provided feedback that the PESTA FB page has become one of their go-to platforms to learn from and connect with others. PESTA is exploring other social media platforms to extend our outreach to and raise awareness among the PE fraternity of the value of PL.
Join the community on this journey of ubiquitous learning!
