Spearheading Innovation in PE and Professional Learning

PESTA strives to create an inclusive professional learning (PL) environment that fosters collaboration, creativity and support for one another. Through the transformative power of technology, we enhance the learning experience of teachers and to reach a wider audience. The result is a distinctive and engaging community of physical education teachers, committed to deliver quality physical education and sports coaching in Singapore schools.

Empower Communities: As research has shown a growing trend of adult learners who prefer to learn informally, PESTA has leveraged social media platforms to provide informal PL. PESTA Facebook (FB) page was set up in 2018 to bring the PE community together to crowdsource ideas. It has empowered the teachers to share pedagogies, teaching and learning ideas, as well as engage in active discussion, networking and celebration of each others’ efforts and successes.

Ground-up Teacher Sharing (GuTS)

Transforming Practice: GuTS was designed to provide an informal PL platform for teachers to share and discuss PE-related topics either in person or via video conferencing. This informal setting reduces the preparatory work for the presenters and allows participants to freely voice their views.

Online Collaboration for PD using VEO

Transforming Practice: Video Enhanced Observation (VEO) is an online video sharing and collaboration platform that PESTA has been using since 2017. The platform allows teachers to upload and share videos and tag timelines for discussions to deepen their learning. Having experienced its impact, PESTA introduced VEO to the whole of Academy of Singapore Teachers (AST) in 2022.

360 Videos and Virtual Reality

Igniting Imagination: With the advancement of Virtual Reality (VR) technology, PESTA is currently collaborating with schools such as CHIJ (Katong) Primary to explore the possibilities of its impact on the future of teaching and learning of PE. Oculus Quest II VR headsets and handhelds were used to provide a virtual learning experience for our students in sports.

SLO.TH.S (Slowing The Shuttle)

Beginners to badminton may not be able to hit the shuttle due to poor hand-eye coordination. By increasing the girth of the shuttle, the flight can be slowed down. Thus providing more time for students to react and experiencing success.

Portable Grid Lines

When teaching a class of 30-40 students, there can be insufficient and inappropriate courts for them to play. Moreover, setting up courts for a large class can take up time. Excessive amount of cones used can also be a safety concern. The creation of Portable Grid Lines (PGL) save set up time and make the playing areas safe for students to play.
