To provide a linguistically exciting, culturally vibrant and morally positive environment in which different races develop a love for their language, an understanding of their cultural roots and an appreciation of their cultural diversity of the nation.

Approach

The MT believes in getting ‘REAL’: Real Experiences & Authentic Learning. We seek to provide a REAL environment for our pupils through programmes that focus on Effective Communication, and Pedagogy and Curriculum that Centered by Differentiation Instructions within the classrooms.

To provide an authentic setting for pupils to communicate beyond the classroom, we collaborate with our parent volunteers to adapt the concept of Kidzania to Qifa called Kidzania@Qifa. We create a mini-community with parents role-playing doctors, zoo keepers, taxi drivers and policewomen etc.  The objective of this programme to create authentic settings for the pupils to use their mother tongue languages to converse and interact with others.

To develop our pupils into confident speakers, we encourage the pupils to share their favourite stories with their peers during recess time through the Bookalicious programme. To engage their peers, they are encouraged to present their stories in the form of a skit or any other creative form.

To provide the targeted help that some of our pupils need, we train Parent Volunteers and Pupils to become Oral Conversation Coaches and Buddies.

We take into considerations learners’ readiness in our lessons. Our resources are customised to meet the needs of different learners, according to their level of readiness. For example, comprehension questions for P3 and P4 are categorized according to different skills required, and progressive intervention at various stages are deployed to help pupils of all ability to progress.

MALAY

Aim

The aim of learning Malay Language is to equip the individual with the right knowledge and attitude towards self and the community.

Goal

Pupils are able to be confident speakers and develop creative and critical mind.

Approaches

The learning of Malay Language is carried out through the integration of six core skills, namely, oral, reading, listening, writing, written and oral interaction skills. The Malay Language teachers develop lessons to engage pupils in the learning of Malay language through differentiated learning as well as implementing various teaching strategies so as to actively involve pupils in acquiring the Malay Language in a fun and effective ways. The department also embarks on developing school-based curriculum innovation where lesson packages are designed using the Cooperative Learning approach and ICT, leveraging on the 21CC initiative to help our pupils to learn linguistic concepts and skills more deeply so that they will be equipped with the knowledge and skills for the 21st Century and beyond.

Programmes Focus

Effective Communication

Pupils participate in activities that develop their Oral skills. Some of the activities include Show & Tell, role play and Speaker’s corner (P1-P6).


Structured Reading Programme

Reading is promoted through extensive reading programme, PERMATA using supplementary readers, newspaper and magazines for all levels.  Through a shared book approach, pupil ambassadors will promote the books read to their peers to encourage pupils to borrow books from the school library.  Pupils also write book reviews and character portrayal based on the books read and participate in library activities.


Writing Programme

Literature appreciation is introduced to pupils in P5 and P6 to encourage our pupils to appreciate literary works by prolific writers.


ICT

Pupils will be taught using ICT tools to promote the element of fun and joy in learning Malay as well as to equip them with the necessary IT skills. Online platforms such as iMTL and Student Learning Space are used to encourage pupils to be an effective communicator in Malay Language. Pupils are given the opportunity to assess their reading and conversation skills using the Oral tools on these platforms.


Mother Tongue Language Fortnight Activities

Pupils will be participating in language activities such as Kidzania (P1-P2), Language and Cultural Camp, workshops (P3-P6), Hari Raya Celebration and Immersion Programme.


Competitions

Selected P4-P6 pupils will be participating in the Scrabble Competition which will be held on 9 March 2019. P2-P4 pupils will be participating in the National Ops Baca competition which will be held in Term 3. Selected P5-P6 pupils will be involved in National Essay Writing competition which will be held in Term 3. Interclass competition (Sahibba) for Primary 6 will also be conducted as a Post PSLE activity.


OVERVIEW OF PROGRAMMES & ACTIVITIES

TAMIL

Our Key Programmes

The Tamil Department embarks on programmes to excite and engage pupils to develop joy in learning the language. Pupils are provided with differentiated learning experiences and a variety of teaching resources (e.g. newspapers, video clips and other ICT-enabled tools) are used to enhance the teaching and learning of Tamil Language.


Reading Programme

Supplementary reading programme and Buddy Reading are conducted to develop pupils into avid readers. Activities such as Book Talk, Show and Tell and Book-a-licious are carried out to engage pupils in the reading programme. Pupils are also introduced to many different genres and exposed to a wide range of vocabulary words.


Effective Communication

Pupils take part in activities that develop their oral skills through show and tell, role play, debate and speaker’s corner and share a book approach. These activities are conducted during curriculum time and integrated into their unit work. Enrichment programmes such as Drama workshops are also conducted for pupils so as to enable them to speak confidently.


Mother Tongue Fortnight

Pupils are exposed to Tamil language and culture through various cultural based activities. They are also given opportunities to showcase their talents. Activities such as Kidzania, Language and Cultural camp and School based competitions such as character portrayal, tongue twister and poetry writing are conducted in Term 3.
