Hillgrove Secondary School transformed its campus into a vibrant hub of inclusive cultural celebration on the morning of 24 October 2025, with a heartfelt Deepavali event themed “Illuminating Our Multicultural Mosaic.” This memorable occasion was collaboratively organized by the Deepavali Concert Team, CDG, NE, SWBC Committees, and the Media Club, exemplifying the school's commitment to fostering community and celebrating diversity.
As part of the festivities, a ‘live’ Chaat food station was set up at the school canteen, offering authentic Indian street foods and three varieties of Indian teas, delighting students and staff alike with a delicious sampling of India’s rich culinary heritage.
The event featured an energetic and engaging concert filled with captivating cultural performances, community sharing, and interactive activities—highlighting the school’s dedication to promoting unity, understanding, and appreciation of different cultures.
At 11:30 am, the celebration officially began with warm welcomes from emcees Ms. Dalvinder Kaur and student hosts, set against a colorful backdrop of slides accompanied by a dance entry. A grand moment unfolded as migrant buddies made their spectacular entrance, accompanied by traditional dhol beats—symbolizing appreciation, inclusivity, and the celebration of multicultural harmony within the school community.
Principal Mrs. Helen Tan-Lee delivered an inspiring address, emphasizing the importance of cultural understanding and expressing heartfelt gratitude to migrant workers for their invaluable contributions to the school’s upgrading works. Following her speech, Mr. Poogan showcased a captivating Deepavali video montage, showcasing the vibrant and captivating sights of Little India and the lively festival preparations across Singapore.
Students then took center stage to share insights into multicultural traditions, including an engaging presentation on Indian ethnic wear and its cultural significance, deepening everyone’s appreciation for India’s diverse customs and heritage. The festivities then transitioned into hands-on activities, featuring a lively lungi (sarong) and thavani (half-saree) tying competition hosted by Mr. Siva, Mdm. Iswarya, and student volunteers. Participants also enjoyed a fun-filled demonstration on basic dhol beats, fostering cultural awareness among students and staff.
A highlight of the celebration was a vibrant Bollywood dance medley performed by Mdm. Iswarya and the Malay dance troupe, showcasing exquisite artistry and lively rhythms that bridged cultures through dance. The excitement reached its peak with a spirited staff singing segment, featuring colleagues from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds singing popular Indian songs. The grand finale was an energetic “Chaiyya Chaiyya” dance, performed by staff, igniting the atmosphere with joy, unity, and celebration.
In a touching gesture of community support, the school closed the celebration by presenting 14-item donation packs to 15 migrant buddies, made possible through generous fundraising by staff—symbolizing solidarity, appreciation, and support for their invaluable contributions. The event concluded with a warm, cheerful dismissal, leaving everyone inspired by the rich tapestry of cultures that define Hillgrove Secondary School’s vibrant and inclusive community.
