This year, our freshman decided to form an unofficial team called G(r)EEK. This allowed everyone to explore and learn foundational skills while still contributing. They worked with upperclassmen and coaches to learn how to build, code, and CAD. While their robot is not being used in competition, this was a good way to use our resources for education and team development.
In G(r)EEK, we practiced designing a robot from scratch. The freshman did a lot of research to explore different options for the arm, intake, and overall design of the bot. We had several students working to learn all of the major roles such as autonomous and teleop code, engineering and building, CAD, and even things like design and marketing. This gave them the opportunity to explore leadership roles with the support of more experienced team members. A major highlight was an opportunity to talk with Bryce and Vin who are engineers at the aerospace manufacturer Sekisui. They helped the team evaluate their engineering design process from a professional perspective. Their help was greatly appreciated as it continued to move the team forward.
