Community Outreach is very important to our team. We give back to our community to help inspire the next generation of S.T.E.M. in our school community. We have generous sponsors that help our robotics team grow and learn, and giving back to the community is just one way to show our gratitude.
Our Robotics Club was able to inspire the next generation of S.T.E.M. in our community by teaching kids to build Beetle Bots. Beetle Bots are an easy robotics project that switch motors, causing a switch in the direction of motion, when they make contact with something.
We were able to connect with other teams by hosting a scrimmage. We were able to scrimmage with BZBots (#7229). It was a good opportunity for everyone involved to learn from eachother and collaborate.
Through multiple contacts in the university, and were able to meet with a few professors. We were introduced to an electrical engineering professor and a few students from various fields. We showed them everything that we do and how we do it. One of the students was actually on a vex competition team, and he said that what we do seems so much more interesting and carries a better message. We went a little more one on one with the students and talked them through what each of the systems on the robot did. It was surprising to see how much of these systems are actually used in the real world and in higher education. After we showed them what we do, they offered to give us a tour of what they do and what the different majors might look like. This gave us a chance to see what futures in these fields might look like. We got a tour of the electrical, concrete, industrial, and mechanical engineering workspaces. After this, we went to another classroom, and this time it was an old professor of our head coach. He was working with some of his students on their panels. He talked us through what they were doing and what you would do when getting into his classes.
We sent emails to businesses in the area to garner support and exposure for our team. We have contacted various companies, primarily focusing on gaining mentors and financial support. They assist with building and providing ideas to the teams. Through these connections, businesses have requested for us to visit them for factory tours, meeting with engineering teams, and to have us share demonstrations. Our outreach team toured Interstates Electric and CQ Medical and gave them a presentation about our program. The staff at both companies had many questions we were happy to answer. We have also visited the Lions Club, a group of business and community leaders. We hope to gain more professional expertise to expand our professional repertoire.
A prime example is the consultation advice we received from Saharafox. Ahmed Makkawy is an app developer, web and graphic designer, and marketer in the tech industry. He assisted us with improvements by making our marketing and logo design professional. We worked with all four of our teams to create a Dutch motif that flows through our whole program even though each team’s design is unique to them, we all share and collaborate with each other.
