Introducing our new President, Aaron Salasek
We are thrilled to have Aaron Salasek stepping into the role of President for MACAC this coming school year. The MACAC Communications Committee recently connected with Aaron, to hear a bit about his background and what we can expect this coming year.
Aaron brings a wealth of experience to MACAC, having worked in the field of admissions and higher education over his entire career. Currently, he serves in the inaugural role for the direct admissions program through the Minnesota Office of Higher Education (OHE). Before joining OHE, Aaron held positions at various two-year technical and community colleges, Augsburg College, and Admission Possible (now College Possible). He is also a long-standing member of MACAC, having previously served on the AP and MEF committees, falling in love with the organization and all that MACAC stands for.

As the incoming President, Aaron has three tenets to guide him and MACAC this next year; intentional community, raising up joy, and practicing gratitude. These are some of MACAC’s greatest strengths and he would love to amplify them, especially as we continue to emerge from the pandemic. Being in one another’s presence and celebrating that, bringing in joy and storytelling, and just taking advantage of opportunities we lost or were limited during that time, will only benefit our work and the work we do with our students.
When asked what advice he would share with those who are new to the organization, he recommends taking advantage of all the event platforms MACAC has to offer and to not be afraid to connect with people at the events or even those in your local office. “We are all in this work together and everyone wants everyone to be successful”. If you have an interest, engage in a conversation with someone in your office or in MACAC that has a similar interest, because “we will all advance collectively from that and gain wisdom”.
Aaron was inspired to take on the role of President as a way to give back to MACAC. The organization has given him so much and he has benefited immensely from the community, wisdom, and camaraderie, he felt he owed it to MACAC to give so fully to this role of President. He is especially committed to sharing all the benefits of the organization with every segment of membership. “We are all better off when those things are put forward. Collectively we are stronger with everyone’s talents in the pool”.
We are excited to have Aaron as the new President of MACAC and look forward to the inspiring leadership and innovative ideas he will bring!
MIDWest ACAC Conference Recap
All throughout the Grand River Convention Center, attendees of the 2024 MIDWest ACAC Conference repeatedly heard two distinct sounds: the whistle blowing from the various trains entering and leaving Dubuque, IA and the buzz of conversation from the admissions, school counseling, enrollment vendor professionals, and more.
Both sounds appropriately embodied the conference theme, “ALL ABOARD!” Members of multiple Midwest regional ACACs – Dakotas, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin – were reunited for two days of sessions, (re)connecting with colleagues, and imagining how the future of their organizations could look. For the first time since 2022, all were in the same learning environment.

The theme of “all” resonated in a variety of conference components. Session content was the most prominent example. Of the 30 unique sessions offered, nearly a third directly focused on collaboration between stakeholders (with an even larger number indirectly addressing this topic). This collaboration took the form of the familiar partnerships, including the admissions/school counseling, admissions/financial aid, and school counseling/independent educational consultants; however, it also focused on innovative suggestions, such as the proposal of cross-ACAC collaboration. Such a trend makes it seem evident that as the college admissions industry evolves, it is necessary that professionals lean on their colleagues from other departments rather than working within silos. Other common session trends included retaining staff (from entry level to leadership); leveraging technology (through AI, social media, and CRM); and reflecting on current events and issues (FAFSA updates and continuing to adapt since the COVID-19 Pandemic).
Another way that MIDWest connected “all” was through social activities. A pre-conference golf outing launched the conference, and receptions were offered by both conference planners and sponsors – allowing for attendees to connect across the industry at various points during the conference. Additionally, a donation auction featuring local gifts from all five participating ACAC states raised $3,000 for the Freddy Miranda Access Scholarship. Following these two days focused on collaboration, it was no surprise that Monday’s social event concluded with members from all ACACs coming together on the dance floor to celebrate their connections and another successful MIDWest Conference.
MACAC Meeting Updates
Member participation in the MACAC Annual Affiliate Meeting is a staple at the MIDWest Conference. This year, nearly 80 attendees joined the meeting (with six members connecting over Zoom), which allowed for an engaging and enthusiastic hour of updates and a review of MACAC activities throughout the year. Some notable achievements included:
The relaunch of the Mentorship Program created 36 mentor/mentee pairs and over 100 one-on-one sessions.
Day on the Hill facilitated meetings between 22 participants and 30 legislators.
The Minnesota Education Fairs saw over 16,000 student attendees.
Additionally, the financial report confirmed that our organization continues to be in strong fiscal health. Finally, the organization recognized the work of the MIDWest Conference Planning Committee – specifically Professional Development Chairs, Emily Albright and Janelle Sperry – as well as other MACAC Award recipients (more details below).
By the Numbers

Congratulations to Brandon Wente, President's Service Award Recipient!
MACAC Secretary, Brandon Wente was recognized as the recipient of the President's Service Award. With over 10 years of participation in MACAC, Wente is described as being "the glue" within the organization despite "flying under the radar."
"There are heroes and then there are unsung heroes," Past-President, Nora Main writes. "The latter are those whose work is just as impactful, integral, and indispensable, and made all the more so by their quiet execution."
The examples of Wente's involvement and contributions to MACAC include:
Signing up as a mentee for the Leadership Development Program in 2014 and then paying it forward by serving as a mentor in 2018
Co-Chairing the Communications Committee from 2017-2020
Working wtih the Local Arrangements Committee for the Minneapolis NACAC 2020 (originally scheduled for September 2020)
Leading the Twin Cities Regional Admissions Representatives' organization as President
Presenting at every MIDWest Conference since 2016
Planning to participate in NACAC's inaugural NEXT program to recognize future admissions leaders
MACAC is so grateful to Wente and the impact he has made to the organization. We look forward to supporting him in his future accomplishments in our work!
Show on the Road Recap
MACAC’s “Show on the Road” event, a professional development conference for high school counselors, took place on March 22nd at Rochester Technical & Community College. We caught up with Greta Simons, Chair Member of the Inclusion, Access, and Success Committee and Associate Director of Transfer Recruitment at University of Minnesota—Twin Cities to give us a recap of the eventful day!
"Show on the Road was a great event despite our first snowstorm of the year trying to get in the way. We had participants from over 10 different schools who hold a variety of counselor positions at their schools.

"We started the day with a great session on Direct Admissions from Aaron Salasek at the Office of Higher Education. A few folks in the room work at high schools with direct admissions while others were brand new to the information. Our Financial Aid/FAFSA information session was more information sharing than presenting, but it was really useful to hear what other high schools are doing and any helpful tips or tricks for helping a student submit their FAFSA. There were strong feelings on how poorly the new FAFSA rollout had gone, but there also was helpful information on what can be expected down the road and immediate steps that could be helpful for some schools.
"[We would like to give] a big shoutout to Beth Diekmann from Rochester Community and Technical College, Ali Facklam from University of Minnesota, and Molly McNall from Winona State University. All three of them work in the financial aid space and we're able to share their expertise in what things look like on their end. After lunch we launched into our Hot Topics in Admissions panel that featured Brian Jones from Minnesota State - Mankato, Kaia Sherburne from Hamline University, Greta Simons from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, and Alicia Zeone - Rochester Community & Technical College). We had great conversations covering everything from dual enrollment to test optional to transferring schools.
"High school counselors had great questions about different topics they're seeing and hearing from their students. We wrapped up the day with round table conversations where we discussed Safety/Likely Schools, 'Reach Schools' and affordability, and SCOTUS Affirmative Action changes. It was great to hear from so many different counselors and the energy in the room was infectious.
"We also received some positive feedback from event participants:
'Great networking opportunity with colleagues and college admission reps.'
'Keep doing this. I've been a counselor for 12 years and this is the most useful college/career conference I've attended.'
'The most helpful workshop I've been to. I am feeling excited to get back to use the tools and ideas!'
"We're already looking forward to hosting this event again next year!"

ARC Update
The Anti-Racism Committee (ARC) recently presented a workshop called "What is My Role in a Social Change Environment?" at the MIDWest Conference. This session explored the diversity of ways that individuals, who are invested in social change but have differing strengths, can be agents of creating social change.
It was a reflective workshop driven by group conversation, which led to an excellent turnout of nearly 60 participants. The workshop included active and energized conversation at small group tables followed by thoughtful group sharing.
Look out for similar educational workshops for MACAC members as well as your colleagues in admissions departments, school counseling offices, and more!
