Presidents' Corner

A Message from our President, Brian Jones

Spring is a really stressful time in our world. College admission staff are wearing themselves out hoping to have enough students committed by May 1, and high schools are buzzing with standardized testing and students are being crushed by college decisions, homework, and exams. It’s exhausting as the end of the academic year draws closer.

But as I sit inside my house with the air conditioning running, I am reminded of the joy and celebration that takes place this time of year as well. My daughter, a junior in high school, is having her prom dress altered… it’s getting real. And all of us in this line of work get to enjoy commencement season, from watching our students walk across the stage to eating all of the food at graduation parties. Working with students is so incredibly rewarding, especially when we get to celebrate their success.

I’m getting a sense of that same kind of renewal and celebration working with my fellow MACAC board members over the past few months too. We have been back in classrooms, Camp College, college fairs, MACAC chats, committee meetings, and conferences. It feels good to be planning productively for the future again. NACAC has emerged from significant change over the past few years and is moving forward to harness the energy and creativity of its members along with working to cultivate the next generation of professionals and leaders in college admission. Our state affiliate is also moving forward with exciting new ways of engaging our members and advocating for students, but more hands make less work.

I want to encourage each of you to take some time to celebrate your students this spring and to pat yourself on the back for the hard work you have accomplished in the last year. I want you all to attend the MACAC Spring Conference in Minneapolis May 15 and 16 to catch up with friends and colleagues and share your experiences. I want you to hear from our amazing MACAC board members about what their committees have been up to this year and then I want you to pick a committee or event and sign up to serve on it next year. I’m only asking you to pick one you have a lot going on! But you won’t regret the impact, and the fun, you will have.

President, Brian Jones; President-Elect, Nora Main; and Past-President, Garth Robertson enjoying time at the 2022 MIDWest Conference.

Meet our President-Elect,
Nora Main

I have worked with students in the role of associate director of college counseling at The Blake School in Minneapolis since 2017. I joined Blake after fifteen years working in the office of admission at Macalester College, my alma mater, where I served in a variety of roles including associate director of admissions.

When I began two decades ago in our shared professions, I was inspired to learn that our organization exists due to the conscientious, impactful work of our members. Members of MACAC place at the center of our work the care and stewardship of our students and families. We support their individual journeys and collectively, we provide the educational infrastructure so they can forge their futures. MACAC thrives and evolves for the good of our membership and our students alike as we further establish us as an ethical, open, accepting, and anti-racist organization.

We conduct our important work in a secondary and post-secondary landscape that bears the weight of accelerated change and unprecedented challenges. I continue, however, to be invigorated by the vision and execution of MACAC’s mission to not only address these pressing issues but to serve as a vanguard as we act to solve them. Our membership across Minnesota is fundamentally at the heart of our organization and your deep commitment and active engagement propel us forward.

I am proud to be part of these endeavors and I am honored to serve as your President and help lead our organization forward.

From All of us at MACAC: Thank You, Phil Trout

As MACAC wraps up another school year, we wish to acknowledge the work of College Counselor, Phil Trout as he prepares for retirement. Phil has had a distinguished career in college counseling and admissions as he completes his 16th year at Minnetonka High School. He previously served as the Director of College Counseling at Mounds Park Academy (St. Paul), Shattuck-St. Mary’s (Faribault), and the Illinois Math and Science Academy. He also has worked in college admissions at the University of Minnesota and the College of William and Mary.

Phil served as President of the Minnesota Association for College Admission Counseling twice (1990-1991 and 2010-2011). He also served as President of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) during the 2015-2016 school year.

Reflection from Phil

I first became involved with MACAC back in 1981, when I was appointed Director of College Counseling at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School. Over the past 40+ years, I have had the extraordinary opportunity to meet, engage with, and work alongside a host of talented and dedicated professionals in high school and college/university settings.

I had the unique experience of serving as President for MASSCCAO in 1990-91 (Minnesota Association for Secondary School Counselors and College Admission Officers) and for MACAC in 2010-11.  And then, I had the opportunity to serve as President for NACAC in 2015-16.

All three presidential terms are a highlight of my career!

So much has changed over the years!

When I think back about my leadership experiences in MACAC, I am happy to note the great progress we have made in diversifying the Board membership, activating the work of the committees, regulating the budget process – during my term as President in 1990-91, we had no budget! – and building the fiscal health of the association.  We now have an endowment, from which we are able to award grants and scholarships for deserving members to attend workshops and conferences.

A few aspects have not changed at all!

My biggest joy throughout my career has been the opportunity to work closely with students (and their families) – to listen to them talk about (and dream about) their future plans and ambitions.  To help them wherever I could within the college search process, from the beginning stages of the search, to the details of the application process, to the end goal of choosing an institution that seems to be a good match.

Throughout my career, I have benefited greatly from the shared knowledge and expertise of the MACAC (and NACAC) world.  I count myself lucky to have met so many dynamic, interesting, and fun professionals along the way.

It’s my hope that I have brought something good to their lives as well.

ARC Highlight

Following the first of many Speakers Series “Ally to Accomplice”, the Anti-Racism committee is working to make the additional internal projects within MACAC. Wells Fargo divesting is still under ways while the committee collaborates with native elders of the Dakotas regarding the Land Acknowledgement living document. Many revisions have been made to speak life of the values and commitment we stand by and acknowledge the more work to be made.

More conversations are taking place with the New England branch, NEACAC, for their ARI ARC 2.0 Workshop in the Fall. Assisting with logistics, giving our two cents, and learning a thing or two from the collaboration has been positive to say the least. Seeing other dedicated Anti-Racism work across the country is the rejuvenating caffeine shot that we are all in this together working for one common goal.

With many more events and initiatives to come, the Anti-Racism Committee invites you to be a part of the discussion and not part of the problem! Save your seat for ARC in one of our monthly meetings to learn, grow, and inspire in your admissions career!

To learn more about the Anti-Racism Committee and how to join, visit the MACAC website.
