Greetings Caregivers,
Happy New Year! I hope the start to 2026 has been a good one for you all. We have been easing back into our routines and expectations. We have started back up with our wild and endangered animal unit. Writing our own nonfiction books takes a while! The culminating art project will be epic and will require some parent volunteers for sure. I will get more information on that soon. Be sure to check out the important dates section as we have two field trips planned for this month. Our class has earned another pompom celebration. This Friday we will take the time after recess to enjoy a short educational movie about wild and endangered animals while enjoying some popcorn and juice while wearing pajamas!! Please feel free to pack an afternoon snack for your child to partake in during that time. Thank you for your continued support around our celebrations! I truly appreciate that.
~Ms. L

Learning Highlights from the Week
Unit 5 How Many 10s? How Many Hundreds?
Addition, Subtraction, & Number System 3
This unit focuses on the place value of 3-digit numbers and operating on numbers within 100. Students come to see 100 as 10 tens and multiples of 100 as being made up of some number of hundreds. They solve a variety of types of story problems (e.g., put together/take apart with one or both addends unknown, add to and take from with result unknown, problems with an unknown change or an unknown start). They play games that involve combining amounts to get to 100 or $1. Work on fluency with addition and subtraction within 100 continues, with a focus on using known facts and knowledge of the operations. Fluency with addition within 100 is a benchmark in this unit. Students also identify, read, and write numbers to 1,000 and add and subtract 10 and 100 to numbers in that range.
Check out this letter that includes samples of the types of math that we’ll be exploring if you are interested in more details. Click Here. [Spanish Version]
Your child was assigned a reading level using the IRLA (Independent reading level assessment) back in December. This test is being paired with other reading assessments such as the Star 360, Power word (formerly sight words or UFLI words) assessments, and of course participation in reading class to determine a "grade" for the up and coming report cards. Truly the information is being used to help your child progress towards mastery of the skills necessary for their grade level. We have learned many nonfiction text features such as table of contents, captions, bold or italic words, photographs and illustrations, diagrams, labels, and even glossary. We love nonfiction books! Speaking of loving books...
We reached our 100th book that has been read to the class! Of course we are going for the 200th book!!

None at the time....
Every Friday morning we will focus on one aspect of social and emotional learning. This past week we learned about the importance of adding actions to our kind words. There will be a blue note from our guidance counselor Mrs. Erickson about an up and coming safety unit in the Friday folder.
