2020 SUMMER READING INFORMAtion

Summer 2020 - The looming Civil War ...

With the crazy Covid spring, we didn't quite make it through the Civil War as I had hoped. However, this give us an opportunity to read a fantastic new book "The Second Founding: How the Civil War and Reconstruction Remade the Constitution", by one of the most well-respected American historians today, Mr Eric Foner. It picks up on themes we end the year (9th) discussing - who decides what the Constitution means? What is the role of the Federal government? Balance of Power questions... It is a fantastic link between 9th and 10th. It is 254 pages (a nice length) and is available in both paperback and on audio book. I have included a number of assignments to complete as you read each chapter. These assignments will be collected the first day of school next fall -- we will begin using this book day one!

INTERVIEW WITH MR. ERIC FONER about his book "Second Founding" at the National Constitution Center in October 2019.

ERIC FONER AT CHICAGO

Published on Nov 13, 2019

With debates over citizenship, voting rights, and due process raging, Columbia University historian Eric Foner wants us to reexamine the moment these rights were enshrined in law: not in 1787, but in the mid-19th century, when Constitutional amendments triggered by the Civil War moved the concept of equality from abstract idea to federally enforceable law.

SUMMER ASSIGNMENT - CHAPTER CHALLENGES ...

As you read each chapter, please annotate. Underline important facts. Ask questions in the margins. Make connections. Highlight key concepts. It is important that you extensively interact with the text so when it is time to discuss the book in September, you can refer back to your detailed annotations.

AFTER YOU READ EACH CHAPTER, COMPLETE THE CHAPTER CHALLENGE!

SUMMER FUN - SHARE IMAGES FROM YOUR SUMMER ADVENTURES!
