About
The name of the place is derived by the presence of two temples Hari and Hara located across each other. The four-hundred-year-old Shiva (Hara) temple is located upstream on the banks of the River Tunga, about a kilometer away from the matha. This temple has intricate carvings on three sides depicting the entire Ramayana.
Sri AdiShankaracharya Sharada Lakshminarasimha
Sri Adi Shankaracharya Sharada Lakshminarasimha Peetham is an ancient and sacred Dharmapeetha established directly by Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya. It is located at the divine kshetra of Hariharapura, in the Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka, nestled on the banks of the holy River Tunga.
The Peetham is dedicated to Lord Sri Lakshminarasimha Swamy and Mother Sri Sharada Parameshwari, who are the presiding deities and the spiritual anchors of this revered institution. With an unbroken and glorious lineage of Jagadgurus that traces back to Sri Adi Shankaracharya himself, this Dharmapeetha stands as a beacon of Sanatana Dharma, preserving and promoting the timeless wisdom of Advaita Vedanta.
Sri Agasthya Maharshi
Sage Agastya Maharshi, one of the most revered among the Sapta Rishis, is celebrated as a profound Vedic scholar and seer. Renowned for his mastery over Vedic texts, Sage Agastya is credited with composing several hymns in the Rigveda and authoring sacred scriptures such as the “Agastya Geeta” found in the Varaha Purana and the “Agastya Samhita” in the Skanda Purana. Uniquely honored in both scriptures and temple sculptures, Sage Agastya holds a rare and distinguished presence in India’s spiritual tradition. According to ancient lore, he performed intense penance upon Lord Lakshminarasimha and was blessed with a Pratyaksha Darshana (direct divine vision) of the Lord at the sacred site of Hariharapura, also known as a Divyakshetra.
The Sri Lakshminarasimha Shaligramas (sacred stones) personally worshipped by Sage Agastya have been carefully preserved through the Guru Parampara (lineage of spiritual teachers) of this revered Dharmapeetha. These divine relics continue to be worshipped with devotion to this day, upholding a living connection to the great Sage and his spiritual legacy.
