MCISD Hour of Code

Our Goal

In an effort to continuously work toward achieving our Vision Statement, our goal for the district is to get 100% student participation to complete 1-hour of coding during these 7 days.

I would like to remind you that we are a STEAM District that embraces Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. Coding or Computer Science is also for students enrolled in fine arts classes across the district that are using technology to create new and innovative works of art from Films, Music Production, Theatre Set Design, Fashion Design and so much more.

Mission CISD is committed to Inspiring Student Innovators to Unlock Their Dreams!

What is the Hour of Code?

Computers are everywhere, changing every industry on the planet. But fewer than half of all schools teach computer science. Good news is, we’re on our way to change this. If you've heard about the Hour of Code before, you might know it made history. More than 100 million students have tried an Hour of Code.

With the Hour of Code, computer science has been on homepages of Google, MSN, Yahoo! and Disney. Over 100 partners have joined together to support this movement. Every Apple Store in the world has hosted an Hour of Code. President Obama wrote his first line of code as part of the campaign.

This year, let's make it even bigger. I’m asking you to join in for the Hour of Code 2016. Please get involved with an Hour of Code event during Computer Science Education Week, December 5-11.

Are you ready to begin?

Yes! Great, your campus can setup the Hour of Code however you like. I've created an outline below to what your campus would need to do. You may tweak it to suit the needs of your campus.

The Plan

  1. The Campus Principal or designee can sign up on the website, click here.
  2. Create your schedule.
    1. Ensure that all students will have a 1-hour session to login to Code.org.
    2. You will need to submit your schedule via this Google Form, click here.
      • The schedule can be a scanned document, Word/Excel document, or a Google Sheets Link.
    3. Consult with your campus technician, lab proctor, and librarian for availability of computers, Chromebooks, and tablets.
      1. Campus Technicians-ensure that all equipment that will be used is ready.
  3. Creating Accounts
    1. If the teacher would like to use a follow-on course, an account will be required, but if they will be using the any of the activities, and they want to have the students use it periodically then they should create an account.
      1. It only takes about 1-2 minutes. Students will use their Google Account Email. It can be found in Tyler under the student info. (usually their AR Login @missioncisd.org.) Password: 22ID#.
      2. For the younger students. You may not want to have them sign-up because it may take too long.
  4. Execute
  5. Take Pictures: Follow me on Twitter @MCISD_Tech; Use Hashtag #MCISDHourofCode2016

    1. Hour of Code can continue if your teachers would like to integrate it with their lesson plans. It doesn’t have to end on December 13th.
    2. This can be used as enrichment/incentive for students that complete all work and have a little extra time after a lesson is completed.
