Canvas is our district learning management system (LMS) for grades 2-12 in Mansfield ISD. Canvas includes a variety of built-in tools that can be customized to create unique and accessible teaching and learning experiences.
Teachers can create and share course content using Assignments, Discussions, Modules, Quizzes, and Pages. They may also choose to foster a collaborative learning experience using Collaborations, Conferences, and Groups. Depending on course settings, students can access these areas in Canvas to find learning materials and interact with other course users.
Parents and Guardians can sign up as an observer in Canvas. Observers can link their Canvas account to their student's account so they can see assignment dues dates, announcements, and other course content. Observers can view the course content but cannot participate in the course. Observers must be paired with their students. This only has to occur one time during their tenure at MISD. Codes can be generated for one-time use and are good for seven days. If both parents want to be paired two separate codes must be generated for each parent.
Observers can learn more about Canvas from the Canvas Observer Guide.
Courses in Canvas must be Published in order for students to see the course on their Canvas Dashboard. If all students in your class are saying they cannot see the course, most likely it is because the course is not published. Read directions on how to publish a course.
If you know the course is published but a student or you cannot see the course, you'll want to make sure the course is set as a "favorite" in order to see the course card on your Dashboard. You can see a list of all courses, by selecting Courses (or Subjects for elementary) from the left gray global navigation menu. Within the Courses menu will be a link to "All Courses". Click on the link to see all current and past enrollments. Any courses that you want to appear on your dashboard should have a gold star next to the course title. Read directions on how to favorite courses.

There are two primary ways to share content from one course to another: The Course Import Tool and Direct Share.
When you have a lot to pull in, like an entire module, it's best to use the Course Import Tool. To start, you’ll open the course and go to the course Settings. On the right, you’ll see "Import Course Content”. Directions on using the Course Import Tool.
The other quick sharing method is to do a Direct Share - this is best for those few items of content you want to share quickly from one course to another. You can direct share in two ways 1) send content to another teacher or 2) copy content from one course to another. On this feature, you do have to share one item at a time but it makes it a great way to move content back and forth. When you copy the content you can send it straight to a module in another course as well so you can decide exactly where the content goes.

*Directions are for Pages but works for any assignment, quiz, discussion, announcement.

In order for students to see images, the image must be uploaded in your Canvas course files. If you copy and paste images, students will not be able to see them. If you imported a quiz from another course, but did not import the images files too, they won't appear in the quiz. For more information on uploading images to your files see the Canvas Course Guides.
Our recommendation is to create a Canvas Assignment and use the Online Submission Type and check Student Annotation.
Overview/How to Use
Create an assignment as normal.
For the assignment type, choose Online.
Under online entry options, check Student Annotation.
Choose an existing file (such as a PDF, Word document, or JPG), or upload a new one, that will be the template for the annotation assignment.
Finish completing your assignment with the normal process.
For more information, check out the Instructor Guide to Creating Online Assignments.
