School-based counseling supports students in their social-emotional growth, academic success, and future planning—all within the school environment. These services are typically short-term and focus on helping students overcome challenges that may be affecting their ability to learn and thrive at school.
School-based counseling as a related service may be provided to students with disabilities who experience ongoing, significant emotional, behavioral, or social difficulties. In these cases, additional support is needed to help the student meet their IEP goals. This type of counseling works in partnership with school staff and families to address concerns that impact learning and behavior, creating a team approach to problem-solving and student success.
