"where it points us towards to what we need for our growth, telling us something about our emotions because most of us occasionally get out of touch with how we're feeling."
I focused on portraying my dreams for my artworks which is why they are quite personal as it portrays my emotions in a form of the dreams I've had. I believe that our dreams shows our true emotions and feelings, it gives us the opportunity to understand ourselves further as we tend to forget about our feelings and mental state. It reminds us of what we need to do to better ourselves. Dreams are like a reminder, and that is what I wanna bring in my exhibition. I wanted to show the audience my emotions and stories by portraying and visualizing my dreams in these artworks, hoping to feel a connection with them.
Throughout the years I've managed to explore different art styles with it and also managed to explore a variety of mediums as well, such as printmaking, black paper, digital, and animation. However, I would consider my acrylic paintings to be the strongest artwork I have. My top 3 strongest artworks are most likely to be studio work 7, and 9 (both final artworks).
My first piece from my top 3 is called “Unravel me”. This is mixed media artwork, with a mix of stitching and acrylic. This art style leans towards abstract art and color blocking as well. This specific painting tells a story about what I’ve dreamt before, I’ve dreamt about going through the day with a mask on. I believe that people tend to struggle with being themselves as they try to be someone they're not, just for the sake of feeling accepted. It's where we tend to build this character that’ll make us blend in with others. It is as if we're hiding under a mask, hiding our true selves. In this artwork, I wanted to show how we should show the world our true colors. Being ourselves is what makes us different from everybody else, and that we shouldn't be afraid of feeling like we're out of place.
My second piece is called “Time stands still”. This piece is one of my most favorite pieces. This artwork is minimalistic and simple, and yet it’s capable of bringing its message and story that’s quite straight forward. This painting is in the surrealism category, we can point out that the man has the head of a vintage pocket watch. This is where the message comes from. I wanted to show how time feels really slow when we're dreaming, I believe that this usually depends on the dream. It feels like our mind is controlling the time when we’re in a dream state. This is why the man has the head of a pocket watch. It represents that we are ‘time’ in our dreams. "It's a waste of time" is something that's truly unpleasant to hear because we can't help to think about putting so much of our short time into something or someone and would just end up being wasted. And to imagine being able to have so much time where the possibilities are endless, where would say "we still have so much time" is what i want to portray in this artwork
The last piece from my top 3 artworks is called “Fadeaway”. This piece is really interesting to me, bringing the message and story to this artwork was pretty complicated. I didn’t want it to be obvious. This specific artwork tells a story about how our dream state changes as we grew older, experiencing and learning different things throughout our lives which builds and changes us as a person. Growing up could affect us negatively, where we felt things we never thought we would feel when we were younger. Such as stress, anxiety, and more. I believe we experience this as we grew older but the struggle never seemed obvious, which is why I chose soft colors as well as painting stars and shines in the painting. This brings a dreamy feel to the painting as well.
Throughout my senior year, I've enjoyed every bit of making and finalizing my exhibition. The topic "Dream" gives me the opportunity to learn more about myself as I was able to learn and improve my skills through the process. Even though there are many struggles and obstacles that I had to face, I am proud and grateful to be able to exhibit these final artworks.
