"a series of movements that conveyed message and emotion to the audience. It’s a performing art form, where the subject moves rhythmically to music"
My body of work explores many techniques, but they all relate to the same theme of dance. This exhibition’s theme is quite personal because it discovered my own experience and emotional gain through dancing. I’ve tried to integrate some topics that allow me to show dance elements by depicting dance types, studies of movement, expression, costume, and dancing perspective. At the beginning of IB visual arts, I was only familiar with few mediums such as oil and acrylic painting, Therefore it has been the majority of my artworks. As I discover other mediums, I’m able to explore different aspects of art such as lino printmaking, digital art, and black paper. The purpose of this exhibition is to show the audience that dancing is beyond body movement; it’s a form of self-expression to communicate with other people.
Three artworks that strongly correlate to my theme rely on studio work 1, 8, and 9. The topic that I chose in these three artwork compliments many perspectives of dance. I developed the first artwork of studio one by using oil paint. This artwork is based on my personal view of dancing. Ever since I was younger, I perceive dance as an escape from reality. Therefore using the impasto technique inspired by the artist Leonid afremov, I’m able to differentiate the contrast of dark and light colors. The thick layers of textured paints represent moments and memory as it surrounds the main subject. The primary subject of a ballet dancer describes me as a dancer. While dancing, i can endure the struggle of reality and communicate it through a variety of movements, which explains how this artwork is selected to show different meanings of dance, as well as a visualization of self-expression.
The second artwork of my choosing encapsulates the beauty of contemporary. I encountered this style of dance in the early days, thus it’s meaningful to me. Studies in this artwork focus on the main subject’s muscle, as shown by the emphasized body contour. The artist Jackie Liu influence me to use acrylic paint and gold flake as the medium. The purpose of this artwork is to show the beauty of muscle in contemporary dancing. To show how simple movement requires strength and control of each muscle.
when it comes to studio work eight, I wanted to challenge myself and chose costume designing. I’ve never had experience in this area, although I’m fully exposed to the dance costume due to my performing background. I started making Japanese patterns from digital media, Which were inspired by the Japanese traditional dance kimono. Then I went on designing the kimono based on my taste. This artwork aims to show the aesthetic and how costume contributes to the message of dance.
During the course of two years, I learned many media techniques that later will help me develop my art skills. In making each artwork, I began to see my art style pattern, which can help create a correlation between each topic. Even though I need to improve in many aspects, I’m satisfied with the works I’ve compiled.
