“An understudy on the feeling of belonging, warmth of the heart, sense of trust like none other and an indescribable everlasting bond.”
CURATORIAL TEXT
Home is simply known as a word that has various definitions as it depends on each individual’s perspective on it. Embracing the beauty of it has taught me that home is more than a place; it is a feeling. The manner in which I have been exposed to different potential interpretations of home has successfully offered a thoughtful look at what it means to me. Growing up has always been difficult for me because home has never really felt like home. As a result, I have always found it to be in the form of people I love or in things that bring me a sense of warmth. Moreover, the aim of publishing these eight works of art is to show others what home means to me, as these are the ones that keep me motivated. Not only that, in hopes that others could be inspired to find their own definitions of home as well.
Due to my aversion to colors and other types of mediums, I began my IBDP by focusing solely on the skills I possess, which is making work solely with pencil and paper. But I knew that if I stayed in the same medium, I wouldn't be able to evolve into the artist I wanted to be. As a result, my teacher instructed and guided me in using various mediums as well as experimenting with colors to articulate my ideas in ways I had never considered. Hence, I had actually fallen in love with colors in the process and had ended up using vibrant colors for my exhibition's artworks.
These artworks are a collection of my thoughts and feelings about home. However, after I began to have my admiration for bigger aspects of it and start to make artworks dedicated to people I love or memories dear to my heart rather than a fixed place. Digital, drawing and sculpting are some of the mediums I use in these works. Furthermore, I plan to use bright colors to dominate my artworks for a consistent color palette consistent body of work.
My artwork, titled Companion, is one of these artworks that closely corresponds with my theme and cohesive body of work. It's a piece of digital art that revolves around a personal bond as it displays my closest friends, people dear to my heart. Due to the way it depicts, it acts as the starting point for my artworks as it really portrays people that have impacted me and provided the most support during my IBDP journey as well as life itself. In order to correspond to my artist reference, I depicted my friend's in a certain exaggerated style alongside a mix of shapes as the backdrop, and right pastel colors to fit my coherent palette. I've never been a huge admirer of doing digital work, but I attempted it with an iPad and an Apple pencil.
In addition, My Resting Tavern, I see it as an opportunistic work aimed to challenge myself in trying to make a sculpture. I experimented with clay to create a realistic depiction of my resting setting, as well as using vibrant colors of paint. This is the most creative work I've ever done, and it took me out of my artistic comfort zone.
The last artwork, Select Your home, combines the audiences perspective as well as my creativity to showcase that by portraying it in a way that is fun and outside of the box, yet can still make the audience understand what is wanted to be exhibited to enhance their minds of figuring out that everyone has their own definitions of home. For this work, I used cardboard as a foundation and a pink pastel cut out of poster paper for the cover. This artwork has a personal connection for me because sometimes I also wonder about different aspects that I consider home. This piece emphasizes my goal to make people realize that each person would most likely pick a different house from the vending machine which correlates with the message I’m trying to give that everyone has their own definitions of home.
I've been learning to be more daring in my artworks for the past two years, which has strengthened my critical thinking and working as an artist. I hope to raise consciousness among my audiences so that they can learn more about who they are as a person as well as dive into what or who makes them feel most loved in hopes to keep them remembered and close to their hearts forever.
