Girls have monster showing, qualify 12 to districts

The lady whippet team proved they are ready for the postseason, qualifying 12 of the 14 weight classes through to the district tournament. It was a fast and unusual tournament, as there were no medal matches wrestled and no team score kept. Once a wrestler had secured a top-4 finish and punched their ticket to districts, their day was finished. 

The team started fast and finished strong, highlighted by an incredible 7-0 record in the heartbreak round. The lady whippets were led by three finalists in Xitlali Nunez, Aliena Osterbuhr, and Trinity Carr. Trinity picked up a great win in the semifinals over the 2-seed, while Xitlali and Aliena cruised to the finals. Also joining them in qualifying were Myia Hofaker, Cassie Bernshausen, Aubree Bules, Myka Petersen, Addison Brown, Autumn Johnson, Mia Melroy, Isabel Serrano, and Cheyenne Vahl. 

Myia Hofaker had a record-breaking day, eclipsing the school record for nearfalls in a season with 25, breaking the previous record of 21 held by Sonny Sowles. Cassie Bernshausen stepped up with a big 17-11 upset over the 4-seed from Lexington in the first round which set up her path to qualifying. Myka Petersen did the same thing a little while later, upsetting another 4-seed from Lexington in the heartbreak round to punch her ticket to districts. But perhaps the biggest showing of the day came from Addison Brown as a 7-seed, avenging an early season loss over the 2-seed from Gothenburg 3-0 in the first round and then notching an 8-3 victory over the 4-seed from Gering in the heartbreak round to keep her season alive for at least one more week. 

Those 12 will travel to Broken Bow next Friday to compete in the District 4 tournament, where they hope to carry this momentum into a state tournament berth.
