269 days later, wrestling season is finally back! With practice starting today (and many of the girls participating in conditioning week last week), let's take a closer look at what promises to be an exciting and competitive season for our talented girls wrestlers.
Season outlook
We have a great group of athletes who are eager to get better. We lost a lot of senior leadership and ability last year (169 total wins), and will be looking for leaders, including team captain Myia Hofaker, to step up in their absence. With 22 girls out for wrestling, we are confident our best will step up. We are also looking forward to building on our successes from last year and showcasing the talent and determination of our girls wrestling team.
Returning varsity letterwinners:
Aliena Osterbuhr: 2-time state qualifier, 34-9 record last season
Myia Hofaker: State qualifier, 26-9 record last season
Cassie Bernshausen: 25-16 record last season
Isabel Serrano: 17-18 record last season
Addison Brown: 7-18 record last season
New faces to watch:
Ashlyn Zerr: 5-1 during middle school season last season
Kassi Fetterolf: 3-3 during middle school season last season
Aubree Bules: All-C1 state tournament libero for the state champion volleyball team
Schedule highlights
Our schedule is as tough as ever this season with 16 different competitions before the postseason. You can find our full schedule on our Calendar page. Here are some key matchups to mark on your calendars:
November 30: V/JV dual @ Grand Island. This is our opening dual of the season against #3 ranked Grand Island. This is always a tough, entertaining dual and it will be in Grand Island under the spotlight this year.
December 14: V/JV dual vs. Gothenburg. This is our first home dual of the season, and it will also be Parents night.
December 15-16: V/JV @ Flatwater Fracas. The biggest dual tournament in the state, we may see formidable foes including #3 Grand Island again as well as teams from Colorado and Kansas.
January 4: V @ Norm Manstedt Invite. Easily the biggest tournament in the state, with over one-third of all Nebraska girls teams represented. The girls wrestled extremely well after the Christmas break to finish second last year.
January 26: V/JV @ NSWCA State duals. Based on our past dual success, we have been invited to compete in a state dual tournament. This will be a fantastic event and provides an opportunity to call ourselves the best dual team in the state.
Team goals
We have set ambitious goals for the season, including:
2 tournament titles
Our first state medalist
Building an encouraging environment so that we can continue to be one of the largest teams in the state.
The state is set for a great Minden Girls wrestling season. With a mix of experienced veterans (162 career wins returning) and promising newcomers, the team is ready for the challenges ahead.
