Our best films spring from powerful pieces of literature. In this course, students analyze key works of literature and then study how literature is adapted for film. Students analyze literary works for theme, symbolism, characterization, and other literary elements and determine how well these concepts transfer to the medium of film. Through reading and discussion, students also will learn the vocabulary of film and discuss its connections to the elements of literature. The course will examine literature and films that have parallel themes and techniques, and students will interpret and judge the effectiveness and aesthetic value of both forms. Students will study how to write a screenplay by formally adapting a novel or short story and then turn this adaptation into a finished film. Additional assessments will include reading assessments, critical essays, and comparison essays.
