From ancient times to the present, societies have created epic heroes as a way to keep their culture alive and pass it on to a new generation. In this course, we’ll examine a variety of mythologies from around the world and different periods of history, and discover the similarities in characters that Joseph Campbell called “The Hero With a Thousand Faces.” Students will read both familiar and unfamiliar stories in new ways, and unearth the underlying meanings of origin stories, hero adventures, and visions of the end of days. Find out why characters as diverse as Gilgamesh, Dorothy Gale, and Luke Skywalker are related, and how you can use even the tales of an ancient society in your everyday lives.
