HLTH 1010 Medical Terminology & Charting, 3 cr. This course is intended to be an introduction-level class covering basic word structure; suffixes, prefixes and terminology associated with the prenatal period, labor and birth, postpartum and the newborn. Additionally, charting guidelines and rules will be examined and applied with specific focus on applications for the childbearing year. Learning Objectives: 1. Common health-related word roots, prefixes and suffixes 2. Rules and guidelines for combining word segments (parts to whole) and decoding complete terms (whole to parts) according to modern conventions 3. Specific medical terminology relevant to midwifery care 4. Common abbreviations and acronyms used in medical records, charts, and other related documents associated with reproductive and general health care 5. Principles/rationales of medical documentation/charting 6. Legal standards of medical charting 7. Obtaining/documenting medical history, antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn care (MCU Course Catalog, 2022).
