STAT 2050 Epidemiology - 1 Cr.
DESCRIPTION:
Students will study factors affecting the health and illness of populations. Students will critically analyze epidemiologic research and will discuss implementation of findings in clinical midwifery practice.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Understand epidemiologic measurement of health and disease
Characterize patterns of disease occurrence
Understand the global burden of disease
Evaluate adverse outcomes using the near-miss/adverse event auditing approach
Identify and calculate risk, prevalence and incidence of a disease
Identify and describe four commonly used study designs:
a. randomized controlled trial
b. cohort
c. case- control
d. systematic review
Define and identify elements and challenges of research including:
a. research question
b. validity
c. selection
d. bias
e. confounding
f. ethical considerations
Define and calculate basic biostatistics measurements
Define and identify basic measures of association
Identify screening vs. diagnostic testing, and understand the differences and implications of each within the context of clinical decision making
Analyze data to evaluate screening and diagnostic test
Calculate sensitivity and specificity
Interpret epidemiologic literature and implement findings
