MDWF 2080 Antepartum and Intrapartum Fetal Heart Surveillance - 2 Cr.
DESCRIPTION:
This course will support the learner to use instruments for fetal heart surveillance, confidently interpret the results and take the appropriate steps to ensure optimal fetal outcomes.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Examine the physiological bases for fetal heart monitoring
2. Describe instruments used for fetal heart rate and uterine activity monitoring and access to technology and testing locally and globally
3. Determine and analyze baseline fetal heart rate
4. Recognize and react to bradycardia, tachycardia, periodic and nonperiodic changes
5. Determine possible causes if the heart rate is non-reassuring
6. Take the appropriate steps if the heart rate is non-reassuring
7. Explain antepartum fetal heart rate monitoring
8. Explain how inequities are evident even at the level of fetal heart tones and can result in increased referral for cesarean section in labor in the absence of racially/ethnically congruent care
