BOTNY 1010 - Herbology for Midwives - 2 cr.
DESCRIPTION:
This course is to guide aspiring midwives on the path of acquiring knowledge and experience in the herbal healing potential for people in the childbearing year. Incorporating texts rich with applicable knowledge, students will apply their studies to hands on experience in the field identifying & harvesting, making remedies and understanding applications for midwifery practice.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the completion of this course, the students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in the following areas:
1. The role of herbs in midwifery care; dosage and proper and safe applications of herbal therapies; herbal properties and the body’s responses to herbs; methods of application.
2. Identifying herbs; basic structure of leaves, flowers, roots; Latin botanical name and family identification; taking herb walks to identify herbs; obtaining, harvesting and storing herbs; growing an herb garden; using herbs with caution; making herbal preparations; study of herbs for pregnancy and childbirth.
3. The midwife’s herbal birth bag.
4. Research of 30 herbs.
