Plant type: Artemisia (Wormwood)
Although the word wormwood appears several times in the Old Testament (translated from the Hebrew meaning "curse"), its only mention in the New Testament is in the Book of Revelation (8:10-11)
"The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water— the name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter."
Certain commentators have held that this "great star" represents one of several important figures in
political or ecclesiastical history, while other Bible dictionaries and commentaries view the term as a reference to a celestial being. However, a common view considers the term Wormwood to be a purely symbolic representation of the bitterness that will fill the earth during troubled times.
