ACADEMICS
Spelling
The spelling words coincide with the story that will be read during the week. A word list will be sent home almost every week. There are 15 spelling words per story.
Language Arts
A grammar skill will be introduced, reviewed, and tested weekly. Student writings will also be assessed and graded throughout the year.
Handwriting
The following areas are assessed: letter formation, size, spacing, neatness, improvement, and effort.
Science & Social Studies
The Scholastic News and hands on thematic units will be used in the classroom.
Reading
Trophies, Harcourt Brace
Our reading anthology integrates reading, listening, speaking, writing, and thinking skills through literature. Curriculum activities in math, science, social studies, music, and art are used in this literature-based program. Phonetic and decoding skills are also taught to help your child become a well-rounded reader.
Just For You is the first book we use and Banner Days will be used the second half of the year. Each book contains grammar skills and key vocabulary words. Each story will have take home books. These books will reinforce vocabulary development. Tests will be given with each story and after every unit.
Math
GO Math! Harcourt School Publishers
Content: This mathematics series has many hands-on activities and real-world problems to solve. Students will write their ideas and answers in their workbook. Writing and drawing will help students think deeply about what they are learning. Each chapter lists the common core state standards. Each lesson has a “Show What You Know”, “Mid-Chapter Checkpoint” and “Chapter Review/Test.” There will also be pages for investigating and modeling problems. GO Math! is based on the 5 E’s instructional model. Each of the E’s describe a phase of learning. 1. Engage 2. Explore 3. Explain

GRADING
Grades are based on writing samples, tests, quizzes, daily work, homework, participation, improvement, and effort. Tests and quizzes will be graded and entered into grade book within a timely manner.
A-100%-90% B- 89%-80% C-79%-70%
D-69%-65% F-64% and below
Percentage grades will be earned in Reading, Math, Spelling, and Language Arts. Specialty classes and social development will be grades by (O, S, and U). Report cards will be sent home 4 times a year.
HOMEWORK
Homework has a definite place in the educational process. It is an extension of the learning experiences of the day. Homework helps your child reach learning goals. Homework will usually take 30 minutes or less. There are three types of homework your child may be assigned.
•Remedial Drill: This is an extension of work that has been introduced in class.
•Unfinished Work or Corrections: This is work not completed in class and is within capabilities to finish at home.
Review: Students should spend time at home studying and preparing for tests
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Attendance
Attending school everyday is important to your child’s success in school. When your child is absent, some assignments will be sent home for completion. Other assignments will be made up during school as time permits.
Planners
Students will receive a planner at the beginning of the school year. Your child will be responsible to bring this planner to school every day. Daily homework assignments and events of the day will be written in the planner. Make time each day to read your child’s planner. After you read it, it must be signed and returned to school the following day.
Classroom Supplies
Students will be provided with all classroom supplies. Throughout the year students may be asked to bring in different items for special classroom activities. Donations of Kleenex and Clorox wipes are appreciated.
