Tuesday, 11/27

1. Plan since we just lost a week of school. No cumulative final. We will have a regular test on finals day (we will have small quizzes along the way) and then listen to science fiction stories from the Martian Chronicles. Also, the notebook will now be collected and graded the week before finals. Why? We need to spend as much time before the end of the semester learning and not studying the past.

2. Introduction to Projectiles (part of our math/physics rocketry unit)

DISCUSSION

    • What is a projectile? Angles a projectile can be launched from the horizontal? What are two velocity components of a projectile?
    • Horizontal velocity versus vertical velocity
    • What would you need to know to determine how far a cliff diver needs to run, in order to clear rocks at the base of the cliff? (To predetermine with math)

ACTIVITY

    • What is the horizontal velocity of a rolling tennis ball projectile? (NB 45 Horizontal Velocity of a Rolling Ball Projectile)

NOTES

      • See NB#35 Mars Lander Engineering Project handout. Access the handout via a link from the notebook table of contents. It contains the links for the two steps below.
        • Watch the What is the Difference Between Precision and Accuracy video (especially focus on the second part which pertains to the precision/accuracy of landing rovers on Mars)
        • Get a Chromebook from the library and check out the NASA Insight web site. Do as directed on the NB35 handout

2. HOMEWORK: Nothing for physics (except for catch-up) Go to the Night Rally!

Thursday, 10/11

1. Talk about notes from NB#35, pulling out key points from the "specific focus". See the photos and two videos on the Multimedia link of this website.

2. NB#36 Audible: Insight Spacecraft - EDL System

3. Design prototype EDL system and lander: NB37 Prototype Lander & EDL System

      • first brainstorm prototype lander and EDL system on 1/4 of a whiteboard (while your partners do the same)
      • share your prototypes with your lab group and listen to their ideas
      • come to a consensus for a group lander and EDL system
      • Record group prototypes in your notebook (neatly and with precision. Include labels.)

4. Monday you will build your lander & EDL system, and the official landing date will by Wednesday next week!
