How to Play

The game will begin on March 1st. Any participants must register by February 28. Spoons will be distributed by the First-Year Committee on the first day of the competition. Only officially licensed spoons are permitted. Any attempted eliminations made using an unlicensed spoon are invalid.

Once the game is afoot, contestants will be notified via email of their first target. To kill a target, just tap 'em with the spoon. Once you've eliminated your target, send an email to the event organizer (asilverman@middlebury.edu) with a picture of you and your victim. A player cannot kill their next target until after they've received confirmation from the event organizer. Do not kill players who are not your target.

Upon your death, tell your killer the identity of their new target and smile for the camera.

There are ways to protect yourself from a spooning. Holding your licensed paper plate confers total immunity to being spooned. Plate necklaces, plate hats, and other questionable plate-related fashion choices will provide protection until Friday, March 8th, at which point only plates that are physically held will function. For the plate to be effective, it must be clearly visible.

There are also several places on campus where you cannot be killed. Bathrooms, your own dorm room, your classes, and your workplaces (while you're working) are all safe. Club and varsity sports practices/games are also safe for participants. Otherwise, you're fair game.

If a participant disturbs classes, injures another participant, or otherwise violates the integrity of the game, that contestant will be eliminated and banned from any future games. You may be trying to kill each other, but you can at least be a good sport about it.

IMPORTANT: If you fail to eliminate another player at least once every two weeks, you will be eliminated. Get out there and get killing!

Player eliminations will be announced daily via social media once the competition goes live. Follow us on Instagram @first.year.spoons to keep up to date.
