Middlebury Outdoor Programs

Middlebury College sits between the Green Mountains and Adirondack High Peaks. Lake Champlain extends for miles and whitewater rivers, trout streams, and backcountry ski terrain all are easily accessible nearby. We provide the equipment, knowledge , training, and leadership to help our campus community explore and connect with the outdoors on and off campus.

Our Mission is to:

  • Foster effective leadership skills through training, mentorship, and praxis.
  • Promote environmental responsibility through direct experience and education in the natural world.
  • Teach outdoor skills and judgment for lifelong recreation and fitness.
  • Provide small group experiences in which participants experience supportive community, open communication, and teamwork.

Our efforts directly support the Mission of Middlebury College, notably in the areas of leadership development and environmental awareness, each identified as areas in which the College strives for “conspicuous excellence

Core Beliefs:

  • We believe the best approach to accomplishing our mission is one combining hands-on experience with thoughtful reflection.
  • We believe that engaging learners in well-designed outdoor activities teaches responsibility for one's self, the College community, and the greater ecological community of which we are a part.
  • We believe that thoughtfully designed and implemented outdoor activities provide a perfect and unique venue for the acquisition and application of practical, real-world leadership skills.
