Welcome to 2nd Grade

Absences - If your child will be absent from school, please call the office at 704-658-2650 and leave a message with a secretary. Please make sure you also send a message through Parent Square.

Arrival - Students can arrive anytime between 8:15-8:40. Upon arrival, students will either go to breakfast or to the gym. At 8:30 students will be dismissed to their classroom. Students who arrive after 8:40 are considered tardy for class and an adult must escort the child into the office to sign in.

Assistant - Second Grade is blessed to have Ms. Claudia, Mrs. McCoy and Ms. Carlton as our Instructional Assistants this year. They are amazing leaders and are going to add so much to our classrooms this year.

Birthdays - You may send in store-bought treats for your child’s birthday.

Breakfast - Breakfast costs $1.00 and will be available to the children daily. Until our cafeteria is ready, children will eat breakfast in the classroom. Later, breakfast will be offered in the cafeteria before children go to class.

Class Dojo - This year we will continue to use Class Dojo to monitor behavior throughout the day. Your child will be able to earn Dojo points for positive behavior and points will be deducted for negative behaviors. Some “neutral” points may be given to students. These act as reminders for specific skills and expectations (for example: not returning library books). Be sure to check your child’s Class Dojo each day. IMPORTANT- We will not be using Class Dojo for communication purposes this year. Instead, we will be using Parent Square.

Dismissal - We will start the dismissal process at 3:30pm.. All children who do not ride a bus will need to be picked up by an adult specified on the emergency card. The adult picking up the car rider will need the child’s specific car rider code/tag. Please hang the code/tag on your rearview mirror. If you arrive after 3:55, you will need to park and enter the building to get your child in the office. Thank you ahead of time for your cooperation and patience during dismissal.

Dressing Appropriately: Second grade is very active! We move a lot and do all kinds of fun things. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately to participate in all our activities. Girls should only wear skirts or dresses with shorts under them because we often sit on the floor. Also, most days we go to the playground for outdoor recess. It is important the children have on coats/hats/mittens during cold weather. Tennis shoes are ideal for all of our daily activities. Students may not play on the outdoor structures if they are wearing flip-flops or sandals or any other non-rubber soled shoe without a back. There are certain areas of the building that are very cold, including our classroom. You may want to send a jacket, sweater, sweatshirt, etc. with your child to keep in his/her backpack. Please label items such as coats, sweaters, lunch boxes and backpacks with your child's first and last name. There is a lost and found if your child misplaces an item.

Folders - Children will bring their folders home daily. A weekly assignment sheet located in the folder needs to stay in it all week long. This sheet will have homework, important information, announcements and our Special’s schedule on it. All classwork will be sent home in the child’s take-home folder on Mondays or Tuesdays. Please clean the folder out and send it back the next day. Use this take-home folder to send in lunch money, field trip money, picture money, etc.

Homework - Students are expected to read every night for at least 20 minutes. They are also expected to practice spelling words each night (assignments will be on their weekly sheet in their folders). We choose to assign a small amount of homework because we know families have other obligations throughout the week. We believe iit is very important that your children are still being kids by playing outside, enjoying time with family, and participating in other hobbies if they choose.

Labeling: Please make sure when you send in money, jackets, lunch boxes, etc, your child’s items are labeled with his/her first and last name. Money is best sent in a baggie or envelope. Please DO NOT put money in your child’s pockets.

Lunch - School lunch costs $2.15 this year. Students may also bring their lunch boxes from home. We will be eating lunch in the classroom until our cafeteria is completely ready. I will send a monthly menu home with your child. After we begin eating in the cafeteria, visitors may come enjoy lunch with their children..

Medicine – All medications must be administered through the office with a signed form from the doctor. Teachers are not allowed to give students medicine (including cough drops).

Parent Square- Please be sure you are signed into Parent Square and are connected to our classroom. This will be how we communicate throughout the school year. We will also use Parent Square to post pictures, class stories and other important class information.

Specials- Our daily specials are on a rotation. Please refer to the specials schedule in the daily folder for the rotation day.

Staying Healthy and Well- We will be washing our hands often and our classroom will be cleaned daily. If your child is sick, please keep them home in order to keep everyone safe and healthy, as well as allowing them time to rest and get better.

Transportation - If you plan to pick up a child that normally rides the bus, you must send a written note, send a message on Parent Square or call the office. If you send me a message on Parent Square and I do not answer, please call the office and alert them of the change! They will write it down and notify me. If we do not receive notification of changes, your child will be sent home their usual way.

Visitors/Volunteers - South welcomes and encourages family involvement!! Every volunteer is going to need a background check on file with the Mooresville Graded School District. This background check is also needed in order to chaperone field trips.

Water Bottles- It is very important that your child have a personal water bottle every day in school. Please label this water bottle with your child’s name. He/she will keep this water bottle in their cubby and will get to drink it whenever they need to throughout the day. We will refill the water bottles if needed. Your child will bring the water bottle home each night to be washed.
