We often believe external events cause us to feel or act a certain way. Teens, sometimes, believe their outlook is the only way to look at something.
Example: If a friend doesn’t text us back immediately, they are mad at us or they hate us. If we fail a test, we must be stupid.
(Albert Ellis) It is not the “adverse event” that determines our feelings and actions, but our beliefs or “the story we tell ourselves”. (Irrational thoughts)
Identifying and challenging these irrational thoughts/beliefs can help us face them and change them in a more realistic way.
Use this handout and reframing exercise to work through some of our beliefs to see a different way of looking at a situation.
