Managing Music Performance Anxiety and Stage Fright

Abstract: Music performance anxiety (MPA), otherwise known as stage fright, affects nearly all musicians in some form, causing many individuals to develop maladaptive coping mechanisms to manage their symptoms. In this short 45-minute workshop, we will learn proactive strategies from cognitive-behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and sports psychology to help us manage and become aware of our experience of stage fright as it appears in the body and mind, while also helping us to perform more freely, musically, and accurately on the instrument during high-pressure events. The workshop will have interactive exercises followed by a Q&A.
Dr. Daniel Ramjattan (DMA) remains active as an accomplished classical guitarist, recording artist, educator, and performance coach. His recent doctoral dissertation explored music performance anxiety (MPA) in guitarists, and he has given lectures on MPA at music faculties at the University of Toronto, McGill, Mount Royal, and other major Canadian universities, as well as with organizations such as the GCNA and the Guitar Society of Toronto. CBC television's the National has interviewed him as an MPA expert, and he currently teaches a course on the subject at Wilfrid Laurier University as a sessional lecturer and classical guitar instructor.

Presentation 2: Dr. Christina Labriola

“When in Our Music God is Glorified”: Sacred Music and the Way of Beauty

Abstract: The 23 original bells of the Metropolitan Carillon each bear a prayerful inscription: “May the Spirit of the Lord reach the heart of every one where the sound of these bells is heard.” These words remind us of the powerful relationship between music and religious faith. Music in the Church is both expressive and formative of faith through its connection to praise, prayer, and communal religious feeling. This presentation will explore the many-faceted art of sacred music ministry, touching upon the function and purpose of music in Christian worship, music as a shaper of congregational identity, music as a means of evangelization through beauty, and music’s role in helping to define the shape of the liturgical year. By entering into the world of church music, we will come to see afresh the rich, beautiful, and fulfilling vocation of the church musician.
Dr. Christina Labriola combines musical praxis in sacred music as a choral conductor, keyboardist, and mezzo soprano with theological scholarship, focusing on the intersection of music and the arts, liturgy, beauty, and spirituality. She holds a Doctorate in Theology (Regis College, 2018), Masters of Sacred Music (Emmanuel College, 2013), Bachelor of Music (UToronto, 2010), and a Performer’s A.R.C.T. in Piano (Royal Conservatory of Music, 2012). Christina currently serves as music minister at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Artistic Director of the St. Michael’s Schola Cantorum, Director of Music for the Office of Campus Ministry at the University of St. Michael’s College, and Sessional Lecturer in Music at Our Lady Seat of Wisdom College.

Presentation 3: Dr. Sarah Svendsen

The Musician and the Workplace: Instrument Interface

Abstract: Musicians constantly face the hazard of playing-related overuse injuries. Instrumentalists using all four limbs while playing are at particular risk. Presenting on the findings of her 2020 Survey “Pipe Organist Playing Injuries: A Survey of Organists through an Occupational Health Lens”, Svendsen discusses various factors and their relationships found in survey participants who reported experiencing pain while playing the organ. Svendsen will also provide some recommendations for managing daily habits to support long-term playing health.
Dr. Sarah Svendsen is a concert organist who has performed across North America as well as abroad. Her research goals are focused on gaining musicians and artists access to the understanding and support system associated with the field of occupational health and safety. Svendsen recently completed her Doctorate in Music at the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on Occupational Health and Safety for musicians and pipe organists. Sarah specializes in instrument interface for organ playing, and she is the Curriculum Design and Program Coordinator for the Royal Canadian College of Organists’ (RCCO) Summer Organ Academy.

Presentation 4: John Widmann

Biblical Bronze: A Database of Hymn Tunes in Published Carillon Music

Abstract: The motivation for this graduate project/thesis required for my Diploma from the Royal Carillon School "Jef Denyn" came from a similar, but smaller project that I did with my organ music. I had so much music, and the composer's name that it was filed by left little clue as to what material the music contained. Most carillons in the Americas are owned by churches, and this set of two databases offers suggestions of appropriate hymns to play on each Sunday and festival day of the three liturgical years, and the second database lists appearances of hymn tunes in published carillon literature.
John Widmann is the City Carillonneur for the City of Frederick, Maryland, where he plays recitals every Sunday at 12:30, year round, on the Joseph Dill Baker Carillon in Baker Park. He has now held that position for thirty years. Mr. Widmann graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and completed in his Master of Music degree from Towson University in 2011. In 2021-2022, Mr. Widmann obtained his diploma, cum laude, at the Royal Carillon School “Jef Denyn” in Mechelen, Belgium. In addition to his Sunday recitals, he retired last year from Frederick County Public Schools where he was a General/Vocal Music teacher. He is also a freelance organist and conductor. Mr. Widmann became a Carillonneur member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America in 1996, and is a past member of the National Board of that organization. He maintains an active concert schedule, and has played frequently in the US, along with recitals in Belgium, France, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, England, Canada, and the Netherlands Antilles. He lives in Frederick with his wife and sometimes their two grown children.

Optional Visit to University of Toronto Soldiers' Tower Carillon - GROUP 1

The Soldiers' Tower Carillon is located on the downtown campus of the University of Toronto, between Hart House and University College. The door to the carillon faces field hockey fields to the northwest of the tower.

There is limited street parking in the immediate vicinity.

By public transit: from Metropolitan United Church, walk to Queen subway station and take the subway ($3.25) southbound to Queen's Park subway station, then it's an 8-minute walk to the tower.

The Exhibition Place Carillon is in a freestanding tower about 50m north of the CNE Bandshell (100 Prince Edward Island Crescent). Another nearby landmark is the Princess Margaret Fountain at the corner of Manitoba Dr & Princes' Blvd.

There is parking in the immediate vicinity.

The Toronto Waterfront Marathon (route map) will be run all morning on Sunday, leading to many street closures and public transit route diversions throughout the downtown area.

To get to Exhibition Place by car, take the Gardiner Expressway (east-west) and/or Dufferin St (north-south).

To get to Exhibition Place by public transit, either:
a) take the Dufferin bus (#29) from points north (note that the Line 2 east-west subway does not begin service until 8am); or
b) take the GO Transit intercity train (Lakeshore West line) from Union Station departing at 7:45am and arriving Exhibition Station at 7:53am, then walk to the carillon (10-minute walk).

After the visit, to get back to Metropolitan by car, take British Columbia Road onramp to the Gardiner Expressway eastbound, then take the Lower Jarvis St exit. There may be a delay as Jarvis crosses Front Street because Front Street is along the marathon route.

To get back to Metropolitan by public transit, either:
a) take the Dufferin bus (#29) to Dufferin subway station (line 2 subway), then eastbound to Yonge Station, then southbound to Queen Station (45-minute trip); or
b) take the GO Transit intercity train (Lakeshore West line) from Exhibition Station departing at 10:10am and arriving Union Station at 10:19am, then walk to the church (15-minute walk).
