Learn a little about what we talk about each day. Please let us know if you have any questions about these topics or skills!

WHOLE BODY LISTENING

I frequently use the curriculum called Social Thinking® by Michelle Garcia Winner throughout my lessons. I teach my students that along with their ears, they should listen with their eyes, hands, feet, heart, and brain - their whole body!

EXPECTED / UNEXPECTED

The language I use to discuss positive behaviors is "expected" which means that they are showing the teacher or peers what they are expected to do. To discuss negative behaviors, I use the word "unexpected" meaning that the student's action is unexpected and might make others feel uncomfortable.

SIZE OF THE PROBLEM

We talk often about what the size of the problem is in order to make sure our reaction is appropriate. This is a great way to help our students be problem solvers as well as not get out of control when something goes wrong.

For example, not having a drink in your lunchbox is a small problem (#2). The students can take a positive action on their own - wait in line to buy something from the cafeteria or take a drink at the water fountain.
