On page 183 in the Student Activity Math Book, Use the comparison bars to help solve the story problem. Comparison bars are a shortcut instead of drawing circles out each time. We use them to compare two things. The biggest number is always at the top in the big comparison box. Use the key below to help solve these problems. Here are the steps when using comparison bars to solve story problems:
Underline each number in the story problem
Think about the two things that are being compared to the left of the comparison bar (ex: 1. We are comparing the number of pens Tessa and Sam each have)
Decide which thing has the most amount and label that thing on the top bar (ex: Tessa has more pens so put a T for Tessa on the top comparison bar.) Label the thing with the less amount on the bottom comparison bar (Sam has the less so put S for Sam on the bottom)
Decide where each number goes in the comparison bars by thinking about the totals we know and the totals we don’t know. (Ex: 1. We know that Tessa has 15 pens so 15 goes in the top bar by T and we know Sam has 9 pens so 9 goes in the bar on the bottom)
Write an equation to show how to solve the answer (1. We know the total and one of the partners/addends. So the equation would look like this: 9+__=15)
Solve the equation and put the answer in the empty comparison bar or empty oval.
Write the answer in the box along with the correct label.
Complete activity page 97 & 98 write the word under the correct picture.
