Welcome to 3rd Grade

A Message From 3ST

As always, it is my pleasure to have your third grader in our classroom community. This month, your learners have been focused on developing their math vocabulary. Our focus in mathematics is on geometry, perimeter, and area. Students have impressed me with their understanding of the relationship between polygons, and are able to differentiate between different types of triangles and quadrilaterals. Additionally, we have learned how to calculate perimeter and the best tools and units (both customary and metric) to measure the perimeter of an object.

In reading, students have been studying how our unique traits make us special. We have read about James Naismith the inventor of basketball, Gertrude Ederle the first woman to swim the English Channel, and Paul Bunyan the hero of tall tales. Third graders have worked hard to deepen their understanding of complex reading skills such as making generalizations, using context clues to understand challenging vocabulary, and identifying the main ideas and details of a text. Ask your child about their reading menu and goal for this week! I have been so impressed with their hard work.

Finally, students have been learning about the Puritans in social studies. We have discussed how the early settlers of Massachusetts Bay Colony impacted our lives as modern citizens citizens of Massachusetts and the United States. In science, we have been learning about magnets and magnetic forces through a series of explorations. Also, we are finally finishing up our presentations on animal and plant adaptations. Students have worked diligently on this assignment, and are proud of what they've accomplished. Feel free to ask them about the organism that they chose and how it adapted to fit its environment!

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me via email (estrasser@melroseschools.com) or Class Dojo.

Sincerely,

Liz Strasser

School Cancellation Opportunities

In the event of a school cancellation, your child is encouraged to use the resources in the link below to keep up with the skills that they have learned thus far in 3rd grade and to further their learning independently.

In math, I encourage students to go onto IXL and practice the skills that they have learned in the classroom. I especially encourage them to practice the starred skills under the CC, DD, FF columns.

To keep up with their reading, students should take part in the Whooo's Reading challenge (please email me if you need your child's login information)!! They also have the option to go onto Get Epic and read, complete comprehension articles on ReadWorks, or to login to MobyMax and check out the modulars listed below!
