Letter regarding Chess from Ms. Figen Sönmez

Dear Parents,

There is an opportunity for our students to participate in a chess tournament that is currently being organised by MEF Educational Institution.

There are four categories; kindergarten, primary, middle and high school. If we can get 5 students interested in participating for each category, then we can form a MEF IS team and participate in the tournament. If your child is a chess player and would like to participate, could you please respond to my email indicating your interest? The chess coordinator will provide a few sessions for the children to practice and brush up on their skills and tactics.

The dates are listed on the poster attached. The kindergarten and primary categories will play at the MEF Ulus campus. The middle school and high school categories will play at the MEF Bahçeşehir campus. Parents will need to accompany their child to the tournament. Please let me know if your child would be interested in participating before the end of this week.

Sincerely, Figen Sönmez

Girls' Empowerment Night

If there were ever a time to discuss and promote female solidarity, confidence building, and empowerment - it is now!

We would like to invite our students, specifically young women, to develop trusting relationships with one another in order to remove the feelings of isolation and this culture of bullying. On International Women's Day, MEFIS will be hosting the first Girls' Empowerment Night where all female students from grades 6-12 can participate in a number of activities and a sleepover to encourage unity on Thursday, March 8th. Your daughter will have the opportunity to mentor, voice her opinion and unpack the complexities of being a girl.

A number of female teachers have already volunteered to bring their sleeping bags and pillows on the morning of Thursday, March 8th to stay over in the gymnasium until the following morning. Students would attend classes as per normal on both days but would remain at school after dismissal.

Students will be bringing home a permission slip for their signature if they're interested in participating.

Your support in these efforts is greatly appreciated. Please direct any questions about this evening to Ms. Jennifer Graham-Magill at magillj@mefis.k12.tr.
