Parental Involvement

The involvement of the parents of the school community is a vital part of the success of the students as the partnership of education is a triangle involving the parents, the students and the teachers. Beyond the communication with your child's teacher about their progress and working with your child at home on their goals and projects, there are other opportunities to get involved. Please contact Mr. Christopher, the Principal if you would be interested in serving as a parent representative on the Nutrition Committee, Health and Safety Committee, or the Parent Teacher Association Auditing Committee or Executive Board.

PTA Executive Board and Auditing Committee

The PTA General Assembly was held on Thursday 19 September with 43 members of the Association present. Nominations and elections for the Auditing Committee and Executive Board were held with the following results.

  • Auditing Committee: Ms Tracy Davis and Ms Katherine Corban will serve as the teacher representatives while the parent representative for this committee has yet to be identified.
  • Executive Board: Six parents were elected to join the teacher representatives that had been selected by the faculty in August. Ms Sally Timms, Ms Claudia Ziche, Ms Banu Ozdemir, Ms Ceran Kağnici Güral, Ms Daniela Cakar and Mr Nick Manthei will join Ms Tracey Meler, Ms Sara Borgarelli, Ms Edria Murray and Mr Christopher Jackson on the Executive Board. The PTA Constitution allows for an additional four parents to serve on the Executive Board. Please contact any of the above members if you are interested.

Coffee with the Principal

The first Coffee Chat with Mr. Christopher will take place on Tuesday 1 October at 8:45 in the Conference Room in Block A. Come along to chat and share about the start of the school year.

Emergency Procedures Practice

The students and staff have practiced the emergency procedures this week. Simulated scenarios for fire, earthquake and security lock down have helped to ensure all are familiar with the procedures so in case of a real emergency it can be handled calmly and safely. You are encouraged to talk with your child about these practices and procedures as well as review the procedures in the Family Handbook that was provided at the start of the academic year.

Our Library

Introducing our new librarian, Ms Ferda Kaban:

I would like to state that this is my first year in MEFIS. I would like give to share a few notes about my professional background; I graduated from business faculty and I worked in a shipping company that is called Yurtiçi Kargo for 10 years as a financial officer and a customer manager. I believe that I will be very well connected with your children because I have also worked as a childminder in England for 7 years, as well. So I am very happy to have the excitement of being with children again.

I am also quite sure that my passion for books comes from my mother who was a primary teacher formerly.

Coming back to the exciting opportunities in store for your children at the library, I would like to emphasize that during our library time we will be promoting the very best of children's literature to your child with activities designed to help students enjoy the stories even more. Also, we will be doing our very best to get (or keep) your children "hooked on reading" by recommending specific reading materials to each individual.

For more information about schedules, procedures and exciting events planned for this year at the library, make sure you check out our website!

Kinds Regards,

Ms Ferda Kaban

Ms Ferda recommends the following books. (see pictures)

All students from Reception 1 to year 9 have scheduled times to visit the library and collect new reading books. The library is also open during breaks and lunchtime for all students to access library resources.

Parents may also visit the library to borrow books for their child. The library is open from 8:30 to 15:30 each day.

Do you know what self care is? Do you know what it is not? Self-care is not selfish. It is needed to keep you being the best you. It is easy to get lost in the shuffle of daily life, taking care of others, and trying to live up to the expectations others hold of you. We all have an emotional gas tank and just like cars, we can not run on empty. Self-care is how we refill our tanks.
