I recently completed my MEd and wrote my thesis on the impact social media has on the physical and mental well-being of elementary school students. It's a very important topic and I'll add resources and information as I come across it.
A closer look at the numbers:
on average, kids ages 8-12 use screens for 5 1/2 hours every day (not including homework or school use!).
38% use social media
and 1 in 5 kids use it every day
A great resource for families, their goal is to make media and technology safer, healthier, and more equitable for kids everywhere. In addition to providing information on social media, they also provide info/ratings on tv shows, movies, and video games.
As part of the presenation on social media, students were asked to anonymously answer a brief questionnaire. The purpose was to help guide the conversation about social media, online safety, cyberbullying and digital citizenship.
I asked the students to consider the following questions which we discussed as a group. It was a very thought-provoking conversation and the students had some fantastic responses.
Do you think social media is a good thing?
If you could change one thing about social media, what would it be?
