Trenton School News

To all those who with courage, duty and honor served our nation, thank you and, Happy Veteran's Day!

I'd like to thank all those parents/guardians who came to parent-teacher conferences this past week. We had over 90% of parents/guardians show up to hear how their children are performing at school. The Trenton Volunteer Fire Department visited the school this week. Members taught lessons in fire safety, exit plans, home hazards, cooking fires, and fire extinguishers.

MDIRSS director of curriculum, Julie Meltzer, was in school Friday spending half a day with 1st grade and the other half in 5/6th grade. Julie has been visiting each school in the district spending a day at different grade levels seeing the curriculum from a students perspective.

The Trenton school was in the news this past week as reporter Susan Farley from Fox news highlighted our recycling and composting. Here is the link if you missed it. - Trenton recycling and composting in the news

The Reading Nook!

What good does it do to know how to read if you choose not to? -Mark Twain

Make reading a daily habit. Carving a time into busy lives can be a challenge. For most families scheduling reading at the same time each day is helpful. Turn off the T.V., sit beside your child so you can both see the words. Show your child that this is important. This time at home should be fun and positive.

Continue to read aloud to your child. Don’t forget all those great picture books for reading aloud. The local librarian is a great resource for read alouds.

NEXT TIME: How can I help my child when he/she is stuck on a word?

Please note: This will be a regular feature of our school newsletter. Please submit suggestions for future topics on Reading or Writing at home to Mrs. Keene or Mr. Z.

Trenton Winter Concert

The winter concert is on Thursday, December 13. The pre-show and cookie sale will begin at 5:30PM, and the concert itself will begin at 6:00PM. All students in grades K-4 are participating, plus middle school students in grades 5-8 that participate in band, jazz band, and show choir. Students in grades K-4 should plan to wear something nice, if possible. Most kids really enjoy dressing up for the concert and it's fun to see them all dressed up together on stage. Students in grades 5-8 that participate in JAZZ BAND should please wear ALL BLACK. This includes black socks, shoes, tights, etc. They may wear a festive tie or scarf that is colorful. Students in grades 5-8 that participate in show choir and regular band should please wear all black or white on top, black on bottom. They may also wear festive ties or scarves that are colorful. Please remember to dress appropriately according to the school dress code. If you have any questions or concerns, please email Mrs. de Koning at maryelizabeth.dekoning@mdirss.org.

It’s that time of year again! The Trenton Elementary School Winter Concert is approaching fast. We will be putting on our 5th Holiday Cookie Sale at TES and we are hoping you will participate again this year! The Winter Concert will be held on Thursday, December 13, 2018. We will sell from 5:15 PM until the concert begins, (6:00 PM), and again after the concert.

WE BAKE, THEY BUY!

We will be selling a variety of freshly baked treats by the pound. Each patron will choose the cookies they wish to purchase from the wide variety available. We will then weigh the container full of cookies and charge by the pound. It's as easy as that!

We are asking all parents of students involved in the Trenton Music Program in grades K-8 to help out. With everyone contributing cookies, this becomes the biggest and most fun fundraiser of the year! All of our proceeds go to benefitting the Trentones Show Choir and the Trenton Jazz Ensemble.

In order to have enough goodies to make this successful we are asking each family to make a minimum of 4 dozen cookies or treats,

The Trenton Music Program’s 5th Annual

Holiday Cookie Sale!

Sponsored by the Trenton PTC

(this may seem like a lot, but it really isn’t- you’ll see how quickly they go!).

Although we all love chocolate chip cookies, we want to offer a wide variety of cookies and treats with a holiday theme. If you have an interesting family recipe or love to decorate cookies, this is for you. If you don't have a favorite, check out your cookbooks and try one of those good-looking recipes. Your creation also doesn’t have to be cookies! It can be fudge, chocolates, etc.- anything Holiday themed.

Please place the goodies on a platter/dish labeled with your name so we can present them beautifully AND return your dish back to you after the concert. Please bring your creations to the music room preferably that morning, (Thursday, December 13) but please no later than 3:00PM. Please label ingredients (allergies) and special type of goodie! It is always great to have nut-free, dairy-free, and gluten-free options!

Winter Clothing Reminder

With colder days on their way, please help your children remember to come to school with appropriate clothing for outside recess. Students go outside at recess and only have inside recess when the temperature and wind chill are below zero. To make sure your child is prepared, they need to have: boots, hats, mittens, coats and snow pants so they can enjoy the great outdoors at recess time.

We appreciate your cooperation.

ASP (After School Program)

ASP runs 3pm-5pm, Monday through Thursday. Registration forms are available at school. If you need to contact the ASP please call 207-213-9273.

Guidance Quote of the Week!

A huge internal change in mindset occurs when we shift from rewards to celebrations. The intent behind rewards is to motivate children to repeat desired behaviors. The intent behind celebrations is to see the best in everyone and deliberately look for each person’s strength. Creating the School Family p279
